With last Saturday’s number appears the first chapter Qf M Reminiscences of the Gettysburg Campaign,” by John Eaten Cooke, of Virginia, written in his usual vivid style. We cheerfully commend the ** Free Press ” to our friends, assuring them of value re ceived for their money. Back num bers can be obtained at any time. Terms for weekly, $2 a year. Ad dress “ The Free Press,” Detroit, Michigan. A rich legscy has been left to suffer ing humanity by Dr. James L. Gilder, who, after forty years of active medi cal practice, has perfected his celebra ted Liver Pills, which are for sale by druggists generally ard by Geox;«e A. PhilliI’S, sep26 ly Willieton, 8. C. The elementary mechanical powers are only ti*e hi number. Chemistry has already discovered nearly twenty times as many elements. Shall we permit fossils to frown down chemical discoveries, when we see such results as Dr. Harter’s Iron Tonic, Liver Pills and Elixir of Wild Cberiy ? Wilt u * / N Saturday at Graliniui*. An attentive friend at Grahams gives us an extended account of the meeting at that place on last Satur day, which we are forced to abridge by the pressure of advertisements. He informs us that the attendance was large, although the notice was short. Capital and characteristic ad dresses were made by Col. Sojourner, Henry Hartzog, E»q., Capt. W. Gil more Simms, Hon. Robert Aldrich and Maj. G. B. Lartigue. Of Major Lar tigue’s speech he writes: “ It was conservative In tone, gave satisfaction to the hundreds of whites and colored red shirts, made many converts, was tne best speech of the campaign, and the finest effort of bis life.” The vis iting gentlemen were handsomely en tertained by Major Hayes ahd Capt. Sigmund Liebman. The thoughtful ladies furnished a splendid hot lunch for the hungry at & nominal price, the proceeds, which were handsome, will he applied to the purchase of a belt for the Baptist church. OWr Hew Cettrt Howac. Work Is going on bravely on our new court house, under the superin tendence of Capt W. J. Rutherford, of Augusta, a member of her City Coun cil, and a competent and experienced workman. Attention Illackvlllc Democrat* Attend your regular monthly club meeting at Court House Hall, in the town of Blackville, on Saturday next, the 2d of November, at 3 o’clock p. m. A full attendance is earnestly solicited, as business of importance will be brought before the meeting for consideration. By order of J. R. Belusger, President. F. P. Stokes, Secretary. Woodstock, Ga., April 12,1877. Dr. Harter : Dear Sir : I had the every day chills for four weeks and uoehing would stop them Dr. Harter’s Fever and Ague Specific was recommended to me. Mr. Edward Palmer will preach at the Baptist Church next Subday. ' i Our planters are sowing and prepar ing to sow a large area In small grain. The office of the County Treasurer has been crowded by tax payers this week. Sow small grain. The lien law ex pires 1st January and will not be re enacted. ► We are sorry to learn that Mr. R. W. Harley lost a valuable mule on Satur day last. On last Sunday services were held at the Episcopal Church by tbe Rev. 4dr. Stickney. Maj. J. C. Golding, of Appleton, was married on the 23d instant. Our best wishes attend him. The County Fair opened yesterday and promises to be a success, under Its present able management. A Wiiliston planter has invented a “ chufa gatherer,” by which one hand can gather five bushels per day. The Pleasant Hill Democratic Club will meet on Friday, 1st November, p. m., at Pleasant Bill School Be. Boiger, U. S. Marshal, was in Blackville on Monday, preparing, no doubt, to arrest red shirts and intimi date Democrats. On yesterday a report was current that Smalls had withdrawn from the race for Congress, having been com pletely demoralized by the active, aggressive war waged on him by Ma jor Tillman. The Wiiliston Democratic Club will give a barbecue on Saturday next, which neighboring clubs are cordially iuvitod to attend. Our candidates are expected to be present and deliver ad dresses. Speaking will commence at 10 a. m. Teachers ofJree schools are request ed to read the advertisement of the next meeting o' the Barnwell Teachers’ Institute. Notice of the change in time of meeting readied us too late for insertion in our last issue. A gratifying increase In the growth of small grain in our county is shown by the simple announcement that Mr. Conrad Elirhardt has ground this year 4,000 bushels of wheat, while last year only one-fourth of that amount was giound. Mr. Elirhardt has bought and is now refitting the Bamberg machine sh^*. N Mrs. Henry Rhoden died at her resi dence, near Grahams; last week. She ♦ was a most estimable lady, and had been a patient suff' re* for several years, having her left side paralyzed from a fail, in which her arm was bro ken. Sbe leaves a husband and two sons, who have the sympathy of the ^Kcommunlty. Our thanks are due, and are hereby tendered, to Messrs. R. L. Bryan & , Q6., of ’Columbia, for tuplesot-djandj.. ford’s Arithmetics and Worcester's Dictionary. These works have been recently adopted as text-books in the From all accounts free schools, and are pronounced by ’ pi obuble iu Europe, competent judges as the best in use. Messrs. Bryan & Co. are prepared to furnish them at reasonable rates to teachers for the use of schools or to exchange them for other books. Are Fat People Healthy?—Why are fat people always complaining ? asks some one who entertains the popular though erroneous notiou that health is synonymous with fat. Fat people complain because they are dis eased. Obesity is an abnormal condi tion of the system, iu which the sac charine and oleaginous elements of the food are assimilated to the partial exclusion of the muscle-forming and brain-producing elements. In proof of this, it is only necessary to ussert the well knowu f*ct that excessively fat people are never strong, and sel dom distinguished for mental powers or activity. Besides, tney are the easy prey of acute and epidemic diseases, and they are the frequent victims of gout, heart disease and apoplexy. Al lan’s Anti Fat is the onlv known reme dy for tliis disease. It contains uo add, is absolutely harm less, anu is warranted to remedy tbe most eon- tinned case of obesity or coipulency. The Walterboro Htabbpg.—There was a serious stabbing alTay between Richard Diott, whits, and Leroy Gibbs, colored, at Waiterhoro’ on Saturday evening Itis^, till bs was setloueiy if not fatally stai bed by Diott. They fell out about Hmu’s abuse of the H"n. George D. Tiiiman, to which Gibbs replied warmly, advocating Mr. Tillman and using language of per sonal abuse of Hhut. idiott spirited ly replied, when Gibbs atteuipteri to pull him out of the house, when Hiott drew a dirk knife and inflicted a wound upon him, a deep cut just above the second rib. A portion of the lung pro truded. The wound is a ghastly one. Gibbs lies in a critical condition, and very little hopes are entertained of his recovery.— [Colleton Democrat, another war is Richland’s criminal docket is now larger than it has been for the last three years.
