Another good slogan for Florida would be "Give us railroad men like 8. Davies Warfield.” Transportation ia to a State what blood is to the body. If the main sewer of a dty becomes obstructed for long, its tributaries are soon over-loaded with impurities, stagnation results, and the health of the town is seri ously endangered. So it is with the human body; the health and vigor of the entire being are un demined, when the main sewer is not functioning. We call such a condition constipation: I wish I could think of a term that conveyed more of a warning to the victim of his own inattention. , I believe I am safe In saying that, if the colon bq^kopt in proper condition, eighty per cent of our ehyonk ailments would never ap pear; isn’t that sort of reward big enough to bo worth contending for T Isn’t such a prise worth the effort? JOHNSON Undernourishment is one of the moot common of the causes of Infant mortality, accord ing to o survey recently underta ken In Chicago. ~ Statistics show that of 4.022 bs- y< bice under one year of age that died in 12 months, 968 died In the first 24 boon. Eight hundred and seventy-six died In the first six days, exclu- Marie K. Johnson rive of the first 24 hours, and 1,798 died from the seventh day to the sixth month. Eight hundred and sixty died In the last six months of the year. The survey Indi cated that a surprisingly large num ber of Infants are artlllcally fed, which condition, doctors agree, had a marked bearing on their undernoor- shed conditions. Naturally, • no one food may prove satisfactory In every rase, although the survey showed that evaporated milk lo many cases had proved an excellent substitute for mother’s milk. This may be explained by reason of the fact that evaporated milk Is simply pure, concentrated cow’s milk from which 00 per cent of the water has been removed. It contains practically every element necessary for good health and Is consequently ■ n excellent bpllder of bone and tis sue. Although authorities on health rec ommend evaporated milk as a baby food, like other substitutes for the natural supply. It should not be con sidered as a food complete In Itaelf. H. Howard, Judge J. Henry Johnson —on the convening of court of GeneriB Sessions here, this morning delivered * forceful charge. The fact that the evidence secured by Detective. Rogers of Govetnor Mc-j Leod’s staff wffl be laid before the Aiken grand jury at this session of court lends emphasis to Judge John son’s reference to the lynching. Two circuit judges presiding over Court at Aiken had already delivered themselves of strong charges on the subject of the lynching, dechured Judge Johnson, but he characterized the mob as “a little band of headstrong, wilful men who had dared to take the law of South Carolina into their own hands and foully jMsmirched their State, with a cowardly murder in which one of the helpless victims was a woman.” That the citixens of Aiken oppose much lawless acts, abhorring the lynch law, Judge Johnson agreed; but what, he asked, have they done to ward apprehension and punishment of the mob. He referred to the. fact that no public meeting had been held to denounce the mob’s action and called for action by, the grand jury. Turning from the subject of the lynching, Judge Johnson stated it as his belief that lack of parental au thority in the home was one of the evils responsible for the breeding of criminals and the spreading of crime, declaring: "We are sitting on a blast of dynamite when we grow lax to the care of our youth.” “When I was a young man,” de clared Judge Johnson, "an appro priate gift from a young man to a young lady was a box of candy or a bouquet of flowers. But I am corry to say that today, in many cases, the young man’s gift is a flask of whisky Criticising the slowness of the ma chinery of the courts. In his own observation, he declared, he had known of a case in which the de fense. attorney had stated he knew how every*juror stood before the trial was entered upon. “It has been, it*ia (being done, and we all know it,” de clared Judge Johnson, asking: “what chance has society for protection, what chance has the law against such a condition?” “I am speaking plainly,” declared Judge Johnson, "and when the day shall come when as a Judge I cannot and easier to digest. A survey of the prisons some time ago showed that 85 per cent, of the crimi nals never had advanced higher than the third grade at school. He bitter ly condemned confusing license with liberty and said that even men in high places spoke of personal liberty when, in point of fact, they . meant personal license. Concluding, Judge Johnson warned that he would not be approached re garding the merits of any case out side of the court room and would not listen to any plea* except as made be fore the bench. Jack J. Plunkett of near Aiken was selected as foreman of the grand jury- . • To Be Free From Sin If you would be free from sin, fly temptation; he that doea not endeavor to avoid the one cannot expect Provi dence to protect him from .the other.
