* A bill has beeti iptrodoced in the
Genersl Assembly requiring lubricat
ing oils sold in this State to measure
up to a required standard. We are
*agtn H it for the reason that most Ail

products of the manufacturers and
such a law would probably serve no
other psrpoae than to increase the
price to the motorists and provide

A Good Slogan.

The large bowel, the colon, is
the principal sewer of the human

tributaries are soon over-loaded
with impurities, stagnation results,
and the health of the town is seri

the human body; the health and

hundred and sixty died In the last six
months of the year. The survey Indi
cated that a surprisingly large num
ber of Infants are artlllcally fed,
which condition, doctors agree, had a
marked bearing on their undernoor-
shed conditions. Naturally, • no one
food may prove satisfactory In every
rase, although the survey showed that
evaporated milk lo many cases had
proved an excellent substitute for
mother’s milk. This may be explained
by reason of the fact that evaporated
milk Is simply pure, concentrated cow’s
milk from which 00 per cent of the
water has been removed. It contains
practically every element necessary
for good health and Is consequently
■ n excellent bpllder of bone and tis

Although authorities on health rec
ommend evaporated milk as a baby
food, like other substitutes for the
natural supply. It should not be con
sidered as a food complete In Itaelf.

y Aiken, Jan. 24^—Denouncing the
mob which on the morning of Friday,
October 8, lynched the Lowman ne
groes, then on trial here for the mur
der of Sheriff H. H. Howard, Judge
J. Henry Johnson —on the convening
of court of GeneriB Sessions here, this
morning delivered * forceful charge.
The fact that the evidence secured by
Detective. Rogers of Govetnor Mc-j
Leod’s staff wffl be laid before the
Aiken grand jury at this session of
court lends emphasis to Judge John
son’s reference to the lynching.
Two circuit judges presiding over
Court at Aiken had already delivered
themselves of strong charges on the
subject of the lynching, dechured Judge
Johnson, but he characterized the
mob as “a little band of headstrong,
wilful men who had dared to take the
law of South Carolina into their own
hands and foully jMsmirched their
State, with a cowardly murder in
which one of the helpless victims was
a woman.”
That the citixens of Aiken oppose
much lawless acts, abhorring the
lynch law, Judge Johnson agreed; but
what, he asked, have they done to
ward apprehension and punishment
of the mob. He referred to the. fact
that no public meeting had been held
to denounce the mob’s action and called
for action by, the grand jury.
Turning from the subject of the
lynching, Judge Johnson stated it as
his belief that lack of parental au
thority in the home was one of the
evils responsible for the breeding of
criminals and the spreading of crime,
declaring: "We are sitting on a blast
of dynamite when we grow lax to the
care of our youth.”
“When I was a young man,” de
clared Judge Johnson, "an appro
priate gift from a young man to a
young lady was a box of candy or a
bouquet of flowers. But I am corry
to say that today, in many cases, the
young man’s gift is a flask of whisky

was shortly to become a mother. In
his own observation, he declared, he

Speaking further of 1 homicides,
Judge Jchnson stated that he knew of
a man being acquitted of the charge
of murder on a self-defense plea when
his victim was actually unarmed, in
his shirt sleeves and running away
from his slayer. “Human life is too
cheap in South Carolina,” he reite
rated, and men have been murdered
for a dime.” _
One of the causes of outlawry in
this state, he declared, is illiteracy. A
survey of the prisons some time ago
showed that 85 per cent, of the crimi
nals never had advanced higher than
the third grade at school. He bitter
ly condemned confusing license with
liberty and said that even men in
high places spoke of personal liberty
when, in point of fact, they . meant
personal license.
Concluding, Judge Johnson warned
that he would not be approached re
garding the merits of any case out
side of the court room and would not
listen to any plea* except as made be
fore the bench.
Jack J. Plunkett of near Aiken was
selected as foreman of the grand
