V THURSDAY, JULY 15TH, 1911. m BA^NWHLL PH0TLB-8HNTINHL, EAtNWHLL; SOUTH CAROLDVA Dies from Injuries Received in Wreck Mr. Perry Sander*, *, young white fanner, who lived new this city, died about two o'clock Monday morning as the result of injuries received when his automobile went over an embank* ment approaching Tdrkey' Creek on Sunday morning, May 16th. The un fortunate man’s hack waa broken, he being paralyzed from the waist -down. His wife and little daughter, who were in the car at the time, escaped with minor injuries. Although Mr. Sanders was taken immediately to an Augusta hospital, where everything possible was done for him, it was realized that his chances of recovery were alim. His body was laid to rest Monday afternoon in the cemetery at Allen’s Chapel, the Rev. Mr. Hooks, of Allen- d&le, cdnductjng the funeral services in the presence of a large number of relatives and friends. Besides his wife and daughter^ Mr. Sanders is survived by his mother, two sisters, Mrs. LeVi Creech and Mrs. Valerie Morris, and four brothers^ Messrs. H. W. Sanders, Engenders, Rufus San ders and RoscqFSanders. — Former Slave Dies. Bla^kv ville, July,!?.—‘‘Maum* Hes ter Jenkins, one pf the*pldest colored women of this section, and one of the few who were once slaves, died at the >oaae of her daughter, Fanny Sim mons, here Thursday. ' She was well thought of and num bered her friends among both white and colored. She war grown and was the mother of several children when the War Between the Sga^es began. When s r little girl she was taken from her mother, Nancy Davit, who be longed to the la» e Washington Davis, near Kline, in Barnwell Qpunty, and sold to tho late William^ Wilson in the Green Savannah section, in Barn well County. While her master was in (the war, she took a man’s place on the farm, ploughed, did very hard work, but said she did- no^ mind it, and thinks it suited her better than domestic life did. spoke She very complimentary about her “master” and said be treated bis slaves, wall. When asked hpw« she felt when she was taken away ’ from her mother ' and sold (hiring slavery, she said she remem bered it well, but thought nothing of it, as it was a custom and she did not know any prejudice existed against it then. , Her daughter, Fanny, whose love and kindness to her mother was es pecially beautiful, was also a slave and holds very tender memories of by gone days when she played around her master’s plantation. She said all of them were kind to her. There fcas never been any devotion greater than this^mother and daugh ter’s. Though they barely had the necessities of life and had to “scuffle hard” for what they did have, the laving kindness and sympathy for each other was Unusual, and Mattm Fanny ia heant broken over her loas. Other children also survive her. This irregular or spotty lubrica tion has baffled engineers ever since the perfection of the internal combustion engine. With many other motor oils, if the motor stands idle for a day or a week, there occurs the possibility of dry spots or a him too thin for com plete protection. Even when the motor is running there arc often areas where there is no fluid him of oil whatever. Then there occurs that grinding of metal on metal which results in scoring of the cyl inder walls. • . Because there is little or no seal between the piston and cylinder- walls, gasoline is forced through into the crank case oil. Dilution re sults, with a consequent lessening of the lubricating value of the oil. When this absence of a complete piston seal persists, there is result ant lack of power—the car doesn’t climb hills well; 'it misbehaves at low speeds in high gear; the motor heats up; heavy deposits of carbon are formed; gsisoline and Oil con-* sumption increases. The best of the old type oils could not correct this condition. An oilier oil that will “stay put” The problem was to find an oil that would cling to metal surfaces so thoroughly so as to abolish the areas of partial lubrication. For more than three years the Standard Oil chemists and engineers experimented with this new “Standard” Motor Oil which, if successful, would mean more to the motorist than any recent advance in the automo tive industry. The firs* tests proved that “Standard'’ Motor Oil would withstand a far heavier load before breaking down than any of the leading oils of the old type. This showed its lubricating superiority. Power tests came next. It was found that the lower friction losses and the better pis ton seal caused a gain oi 3% to 5% in Po*** when motors were lubricated with ’‘Stand- ard” Motor Oil. It may seem almost incredible that a lubri cating oil can produce such improvements in car operation. But trying is believing, and many motorists report that they can ac tually "feel the difference” while driving.
