r — X.'. FACE FOUR. ^ THE BARNWELL PEOPLE-SENTINEL, BARNWELL, SOUTH CAROLINA THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 27. v ' The Barnwell People-Sentinel DARKEST DAY IN HISTORY ■ - - ‘ 1 8 ^ ^ 1 : -J JOHN W. HOLMES 1840—1912. Entered at the post office at Barnwell S. C., as second-class matter. SUBSCRIPTION RATES: One Year - $IA0 Six Months — —- .90 Three Months v — (Strictly in Advance.) THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 25, 1926. ‘Feed Yourself or Perish.’ “Feed yourself or perish” is the warning issued hv Clarence Ousley, president of the Cotton Reduction Acreage Movement Association, who also declares that any farmer who plants cotton this Spring with the expectation of getting more than 17 cents a pound for his product is a “mere speculator.” Prominent buhiness men and bank ers throughout the South are warn ing the farmers against the folly of planting a large acreage in cotton again this year. A surplus will be carried over from the 1925 crop, which totalled about sixteen million bales, and a crop of anything like that size again this year will mean ruinous prices, with hard times and bankruptcy staring the people in the face.! \ The - "People-Sentinel is not a “calamity howler,” but as we see it* the situation is fraught with grave danger to the agricultural interests of the South. And this view seems to be shared by everybody except the farmer himself, who will probably disregard all warnings and plant every acre of cotton that he possibly can. We expresed the opinion some time ago that the bankers can con trol the situation to a large extent and in an interview given out in Columbia Saturday, Col. Harry D. Calhoun, of this city, president of the South Carolina Bankers Associa tion, said: “There is little likelihood of continuance of credit to farmers who do not grow their own food and feed.” Col. Calhoun advocates "bet ter cotton on fewer acres and more feed on more acres.” We would like to see that slogan adopted by every banker and supply merchant in. the South. The United States Government has already warned the farmers against over-production this year, bankers and business men are issuing similar warnings and the farmer will have no. one to blame ‘but himself if he in sists on pulling down the temple of prosperity by growing another large crop. The handwriting is on the wall that he who plants may read. Confidence. |WtT CVrMNfr WHEN MX! His Granddaughter, EVELYN CREECH. Go\an News. The late Major John W. Holmes, founder and for many years beloved editor of The Barnwell People, often remarked that “confidence is a plant of slow growth.” Like a majestic oak, it takes years to grow and only a short time to destroy it. No longer do men conduct their business affairs on the “public be damned” principle. In order to succeed, a business must enjoy the confidence of the people it serves. Especially is this true of a news paper. Like Caesar’s wife, it must - be above- repvoaeh. ■ WlTPP ""PBWU T, "”‘ confidence is fost or shaken, it has outlived its usefulness and, to use' a vulgar expression, tj^e owner might as well "spit on the fire and" call the dogs.” ^ The PeoplerSentinel has always strived to merit the confidence of the people of Barnwell County. W’e believe we enjoy it in a very large measure and it shall ever be our con stant aim to keep this paper in the forefront of South Carolina journal ism with an untarnished reputation for truth anti honesty and square- dealing.
