Shortly before 5 o'clock yesterday afternoon as tho engineer of a freight train was pulling his string of cars into the outside cdgo of the city ho happened to glance behind him and saw that bis train was on fire-or at least it looked that way to him. Clouds of ?moke were coming up from one of the cars. Knowing that he and thc crew would be powerless to extinguish the flame tho engineer put on" full steam ahead and with his whistle wide open he roared into town. People heard the whistle and gave tho fire alarm. The train wan on tko Charleston and Western Carolina tracks and tho Ure department went to '.ho now sta tion when thc train was at the old j station. However this mistake was discovered in a few seconds and the' department made r. quick run down I the railroad tracks to the station on Market street whero the biasing bales were extinguished with but little dif ficulty.
