WEEKLY COTTON
Steady Tone Has Doveloped in
Situation During tho Past
Week.
(?y Associated Tress.)
NEW YORK, Oct. 30.-A steady
tone lie.? developed in tho cotton sit
uation during! Hie past week, and
while sentiment still is vory much
unsettled, some traders arc inclined
to believe the market haa seen iii
maximum estimates of the crop and
thc worst phases of trade depression
Thc amount of colto'n Ginned to Oc
tober 13 encouraged largo crop esti
mates, but since thc publication o
thc figures, killing frosts over most
of the belt have tended toward more
bullish Ideas of tho supply. Increas
lng export demand and an improviti'
financial situation help to account for
mote cheerful view.
Tho demand for last half of Oc
tober commitments apparently has
absorbed "diatrcss" cotton and pros
pects that the $135,000,000 loan
fund soon will be available on the
basis of G cents for middling cotton
is believed to.have stiffened tho atti
tude of such farmers ns are not un
der tho necessity of forcing their cot
ton on the Immediate market.
Offerings have been smaller dur
lng the past few days, and thorc have
been advances of half a cent Or more
in the prices asked by Southern shlp
Jpcrs. Liverpool has reduced the li
quidating prices of. January-February
them to 4.S0d, ''which, at the differ
ence agreed upon last September,
would equal 7 l-2q for December con
tracts In Now York, and disputes
have arisen in the undoing of st rad
dies. This matter is considered of
diminished general Importance, how
over, as the operation of the propos
ed .syndicate pinn is expected to make
a reopening of the market possible
without waiting for tho complete ll
'initiation of International accounts.
New York Cotton
' (By Associated Press.)
NIVy YORK? OcL 30.'-^According tc
a statement today by tho chairman
nf the cotton"''exchange . liquidating
committee, alf official -announcement
of ihe syndicate plan for* taking over
old contracts will bo mode as soon
as a court order has been handed
down permitting thc sale nt 0 ccntr
for December, ot the contracts of a
large firm which failed herc during
tho summer. Thia promise seemed to
increase confluence in an carly re
sumption of business, and the action
of tho board o(. managers in passln?
rules which lirovidr. that the new
commission rate shall applv only to
trading in new style contracts evi
dently was considered another step
:n thc same direction.
A tcnative plan for a,clearing house
aiso was considered by the board at
todays meeting, and will bc taken m
again Monday, wficn the conference
committee also will resume negotia
tions with Liverpool on liquidation of
straddle accounts.
Southern advices indicated contin
ued firmness in tho Southern marketr
which woro generally higher and lt
was reported that considerable busi
ness was done In December contracts
on the curb here at the 71-2 cents
level. Detailed weather reports show
ed further frosts in the heit, but tem
peratura seemed somewhat higher
and generally clear conditions pre
vailed in tho South.

saw that bis train was on fire-or at
least it looked that way to him.
Clouds of ?moke were coming up
from one of the cars. Knowing that
he and thc crew would be powerless
to extinguish the flame tho engineer
put on" full steam ahead and with his
whistle wide open he roared into
town. People heard the whistle and
gave tho fire alarm.
The train wan on tko Charleston

I the railroad tracks to the station on
Market street whero the biasing bales
were extinguished with but little dif

The damage done will he' small as
part of the bales did not suffer at all
while on others nothing was burned
except a part of the bagging.
