' variable in different sections i>!' the S | In some localities then' has been l??. j much rain, anil in others t??o lilth . j Noitheast winds have prevailed in miiiic j ^ counties, and the nights have been < ;><?!, ' but, generally, the weatlw r has been propitious, 174 correspondents importing , it as favorable, 51 unlavorable. < COTTON. I Cotton s)?ows considerable improve- 1 jnent since the 1st of August. 1'pto;1 that date the seasons had been generally :l unfavorable for the crop, but during 1 August the plant grew rapidly and put ' on a f)i,e amount of fruit, in many sections, however, the correspondents say ; that the weed is still small and poorly ^ fruited. The crop on red hinds promises ' a much better yield than wa? anticipated a month ago, but on sandy lands little improvement has been noticed. Ilust is reported in nearly every section, and slight shedding of under leaves is noticed. The caterpillar appeared in Al>- I beville, Greenville, Clarendon, Orangeburg, Beaufort, Berkely, Charleston, ^Hampton, Marion. Sumter and Williams- j burg, but the damage to the crop of the | State from this cause amounts to less ' , t1 than 2 per cent. i In the lower counties, where the loss 1 is usually greatest, remedies were applied promptly as soon as ihe caterpillar I appeared, an<J farther injury prevented. { 'i'he yield of cotton will depend largely ' upon the Fall season. It will be materjally reduced by an early frost, while * m'pch of the young fruit will mature il j |rost is late. The top crop has been in- < jured in some sections by the diiferent "* d rough s a The ayoraee condition of the cotton crop for"4hti mouths of Juno, July ami 'August of the present year was 77. against P'? for the same months in 1885. ,There is this diHeronce, however, in favor of the present crop. In 1885 the crop sustained the greatest injur)' iki August, when, from the effects of drought, hit^h winds und caterpillar, the condition dropped to 84 on the 1st of September. This year, as already stated, the crop improved during the month of August. The condition on the 1st of t September this year is reported as fol- 1 lows : Upper Carolina 7^: Middle Carolina 7i?, and Lower Carolina 80. Average for the State 71), against 84 at the same time nst year, and in mi the 1st ol August this year. '"the siren of the present crop is 1,630,$.">6 acres, against 1,722,K)8 acres last ' ii( . > ' year. Kaily in the year the outlook for a f\ill corn crop was very promising, bul the total yield has boon reduced by the destruction of the crop on bottom lands, qnd the partial fiylure of the crop on j sandy lands. The reports for August show I feat. early planted upland Corn will give a full average j'ield ; the late planting will inafcy a fair crop, while lha't part of the'erop replanted on river ( and creek bottoms does' not promise the iiriu^l yiyld. The condition of the crop, September 1st. is report :d as follows : Ijpper 'Carolina,'72 Middle Carolina, 8.">; Lower Carolina. 87 ; average for the State BO, against J.OOon the 1st of Sep- 1 Member, 1885.
