regarding the condition of the growing '
crops, and furnishes the following sum '

unfavorable for the crop, but during 1
August the plant grew rapidly and put '
on a f)i,e amount of fruit, in many sections,
however, the correspondents say ;
that the weed is still small and poorly ^
fruited. The crop on red hinds promises '
a much better yield than wa? anticipated
a month ago, but on sandy lands little
improvement has been noticed. Ilust
is reported in nearly every section, and
slight shedding of under leaves is noticed.
The caterpillar appeared in Al>- I
beville, Greenville, Clarendon, Orangeburg,
Beaufort, Berkely, Charleston,
^Hampton, Marion. Sumter and Williams- j
burg, but the damage to the crop of the |
State from this cause amounts to less '

than 2 per cent. i
In the lower counties, where the loss 1
is usually greatest, remedies were applied
promptly as soon as ihe caterpillar I
appeared, an<J farther injury prevented. {

upon the Fall season. It will be materjally
reduced by an early frost, while *

the crop improved during the month of
August. The condition on the 1st of t
