( Perhaps the darkest blot on the es-i 1 ^ , cntcheou of these United States, is that ' polygamy, ms practiced by the Mormons 1 of Salt I*ake City. Wolihl-be philan- 1 thropists and humanitarians howled themselves sore and hoarse over slavery. ' whilst condoning or ignoring this ' worse curse and blight upon'morals. We have no question in our own mind ' either of the policy or wisdom of wip-< ? ; \ - ing from the fare of the earth every vcs- i tige of this olFense which is a stench in > the nostrels of decency and religion. ' Jf Albert Sidney Johnson had been left ' alone years ago to carry out his prompt ' and '"thorough" measures against the -v Mormons, this nation would have been ' "vl' . Rpared the mortification of acknowl- 1 edging now that it has in its presence ah institution whose tenets and whose < practices are revolting and disgusting, t an outrace upon our civilization. We < were and are heartily in favor of Sena- ' tor Edmunds' law under which many of these sinners, who call themselves saints, have been tried, convicted and < , punished for bigamy, polygamy and < , adultery. But we have grave doubt I both of the policy and the Constitution- i ality of the bill just passed by the Sen- t ate at the instance of Senator Kd- i ujfinds for the government of tho tein- < . > poral atfairs of the Mormon Church. I i We believe that every effort to stamp /out the criminal features' of the Mormon is both right, and proper. That be- j ing done we fail to se?a how Congress , can interfere with the temporal and ' spiritual management of the Church, i The first amendment oT the United i J t States Constitution forbids it. Moreo- i ver we doubt the policj\ It may bo i that in the affairs of a Territory, Congress has tnore latitude of interference than in the aifairs of a sovereign State, 1 but it is a step towards political ami re- j ] ligious interference in our domestic af-! ] fairs that wo view with concern ami i alarm, By all means let Congress keep < its hands oft* our internal affairs. We i .are quite capable of regulating them f(;; ' .ourselves. We think Senator Edmunds' new law 1 jgocs too far. It is too "paternal." FREEZING "WEATHER. ] , On last Friday about 0 o'clock a. in., It began to rain, by 11 o'clock this fay' - r? turned to snow, and for about one hour the snow fell in very large and numerous .flakes. Owing to the wet condition of thi? irrnnnil it rliil nnt ctnv 1>?I 1.^.1 i -- O l,lv-IIC" I L, . before the day was svor. That night the wind rose and blew a porfcet gale. The blasts were like those from . "Greenland's Icy Mountain.'* On Saturday morning everything was frozen hard. The thermometer was down to 5;. 12 decrees. On Sunday morning it was down to 7, and Sunday night it is snid v to have been down to zero, and the wind continued to blow with unabated K# fury. During the last two days the sun I- .. has shown brightly and yesterday the wind lulled, and to some extent the weather moderated. Haroly has this jy .rj * section seen such a siege of cold woath? cr. Old people any it is equal to the y. famous cold Saturday of many years ^"v: ago. We Jtave heard of cattle and pj*'; fowls being frozen to death, and doubtless there has been much sufFiiring in k: the community. The papers are full of ?gf?? distressing"accounts of the extreme cold in the North and North-west. Travel and business in those latitudes are nearly entirely stopped, and much loss ffifc/' Anfl damage must result We hope our correspondents in the . ieountry will send us reports of the cold in their sections. MR. PKIIHY'S BILfi. | Congressman W. H. Perry hns introBp duced a bill for the establishment of I ( *oparate Judicial Establishments of the United States Courts in the two Dis Kfi:,. tricts of South Carolina^ This is a Wfc J*good scheme." The interests of the j&'\ poople of the two Districts require sopWi './Jitate establishments. The delay in the trial of causes in the IT. S. Courts for the District of South Carolina is immense. Man}' months often elapse unI dor these "delays." We think Mr. I'erjry'a bill will be in the interest of jusr; tice and luw. I Captain Kirk is surveying a lino from jCokesbury to Abbeville, with a view of I connecting this place with the narrow P: guage road at Cokesbury. The survey I .-has reached to within a short distance K|; of Long Cane, and the engineer finds Kjg 'the route cheaf> and practicable. The W&- average coat of grading will be about $515 por mile. Why shouldn't thia road bo built ? Think of it friend*. We peed all the roads we can got. rHK building and loan asso ciation. This association obtained a charter at the last session of tho Legislature. It svill be organized in a few days, and will set to workv In conjunction with ihe Hank it will be both remunerative to the stockholders and beneficial to the community and the public. More than the requisite number of shares to organize have been taken, but as the maximum allowed by the charter is one thousand there nre still some to be had. We advise our friends in till the towns in the County iind also those not in towns, to take shares in this enterprise. I'hey will find it to be tho c/te<t/test and infest way to borrow a little money nt i time of the year when they can't ?;et t anywhere else. Kaeh month the Association will have a certain amount'of money to lend, and of course those who ire members will have preference over :hose who are not. Wherever these associations have been formed they have ixien found safe and reliable. We adrise everybody to take stuck in this one. Hie subscription list can be found at the office of Messrs. Cason and lionham and :hese gentlemen will take pleasure in >xplainin? ihe working of the association to any inquirers. The Orangeburg Times and Democrat justly* ranks as one oT the best weekly papers in South Carolina. It las recently been enlarged to a paper of ight pages, and is full of reading mat;er. No paper comes to lliis office that s more welcome. We congratulate it >n its improvement ami have no douht hat it will prove to l?e beneficial. Mr. T. M. Scott has sold his interest .. \f ?n :..t. i -i - . >? ii uic iiiii:k .1 (u'k/icc It) iVU'SSl'8. Fames Cuthrnn. Jr.. ami J. W. I'eake. Phe Aden nee is a credit to its proprietors and to the town of McCormick, ami ive are sure these gentlemen will kec.?j? t well up to the standard of a first-class newspaper. The Anderson ,/ourwd I.as been onlargfd loan erglit column paper, and is printed on both sides at :.omo. We are pleased to see this evidence of our neighbor's prosperity. It is a manly, outspoken paper and deserves well ol the people of Anderson County. Speaker Carlisle has announced lii.s committees and South Carolina conies in for a very good share of the honors. But sonv of our contemporaries think she ought to have had a place en the appropriations committee.
