I How a Number ol* Imminent SclentiHt? One scientist was of th" opinion that some form of the Chinese language would he the natural tongue. Twenty different results were predicted. At last it was decided to test the mutter, and a committee wax appointed to tfurrv out tln> ?>vtit.rimpni Two infants were procured and put )n the charge of a denf and dumb woman who lived in the Alps and made n living b.v rearing chickens and tending sheep. The woman was given strict injunctions to allow no one to speak to these children, and as her cottage was some miles distant from any neighbor, the circumstances surrounding the expuriment were very favorable. Years rolled on, and many of the members of the society hod lost sight of the interesting experiment. Some members of the committee died, And there was great danger of the results of this wonderful test being lost to the world. Fortunately two of the members of the committee kept faithful watch on the case, and when the children were six years old brought them, with their nurse, into a meeting fif the "savants." Every member was on the tiptoe of expectation as to the result. Not one word could either of the children utter: their only form of language was a wonderfully good imitation of the crowing of a ai? Mr, Roberts, the Aged Ex-Prfisltlent of the Hank of Augusta Attempts {Suicide. ]Frotn the News aud Courier.! Auou8Ta. May 12 ?This morning, about 10 o'clock. Mr. William S. Rot .crts, whp was recently before the Courts on a requisition froiu the Governor of ^ew York, cut his throat with a razor, inflicting a wound which is serious, but not necessarily fatal. The act was committed in the office over the cotton warehoijse of W. S. Roberts & Son, corner of Reynold and Seventh streets, llis ton, Mr. J. P. Roberts, who was in the room with him at the time, managed to take the razor away froin his father before he could make a second cat, and then hurrid off to get a physician. Mr. J. II. Spears, who was in the oflie.e below when Mr. J. P. Roberts came through ep his way for a doctor, went up-atairs pnd found Mr. Roberts standing by the bureau. Blood was ilowing in a stream from the wound in his neck. As Mr. Spears walked up towards him Mr. Roberts grasped the razor again, and made another cut on the other side of his throat. Mr. Spears caught hold of his hand and took the razor from it, and then placed him on tho bfcd. Dr. Campbell arrived shortly afterwards and bound up the wounds. The anticipated danger is from secondary hem.orrhage. Mr. Roberts has been in .very low spirits ever since tho suspension of the Bank of Augusta. At a pieeung 01 the depositors aoon after that event one of the number, a Frenchman, drew a rope from his pocket and proposed that they hang the president. Mr. Roberts declared when he heard of it that he had no desire to live, and would thank any one who would take his life. If anybody came to hang him he would offer no resistance. At another tiu?u he Raid he felt tempted to take his own life. The e;rand jury found three true hjlls against hiip for embezzlement and perjury, and he jvas notified fif the fact last night. It is believed that hitr troubles had crazed him. lie is now lying in a very critical condition jn tke room where the act was committed. Sheriff Danel notified Huberts Monday night that true bills had been found against him, and that he must give four thousand dollars bail in each case. The shefiff rcachcd Robert's office ibis piorning with the warrant for his arrest just as he cut his throat, and of course did not serve it. 4 Haunted Houm?, Mo$RO?, GA.,(M*y. 4.?rhere is an .old )u?nse near Iligh.Shpal* Factory wliich is a souroe of terror tq all the people for miles (rtp^ml. Trav- m filers after night would go out of their way rather than pass the promises, while among the negroes the cxeitemcnt amounts to a panic. The Inst occupant of this house was an old man, who died some time since, for he alone would consent to brave the spirits and sleep under the same roof with them, in the still hours of the night hunilteds of reliable witnesses attest that they have been aroused from quiet slumber by the strangest and most unearthly sounds. In one room, last week, a mother was heard rocking her | babe to sleep, and singing a weird lula by ; the doors were thrown suddenly open ami persons wore heard walking up and down the stHirs. Some time since a prominent preacher, who scouted at thu idea of ghosts, spent a night nt tins house. The next morning he appeared pale and haggard, and stated that he would not sloop another night beneath the roof for all the gold in the universe;. Families have been known to pack up at midnight and leave rather than brave the terror.*which seemed to stand between them and daylight, being driven oil* through fear of th? strange sounds heard. Last night Mr. and Mrs. Thrall loft home to rehearse with the East Methodist Church choir, leaving at home their two daughters, Emma, aged 18, and Grace, aged about 9. The servants had gone out. Before leaving, Mrs. Thrall closed the blinds and securely T fastened the doors and windows, but 1 neglected te close a window in a back ^ room. After doing this lie cut her dress into tatters t and meanwhile his accomplice had gone through the house, but secured nothing except the silver ?n the dining table. The intruders, after securing this booty, left. Km ma soreuniftd and called in the neighbors, but the men had disappeared. Mr. and Mrs. Thrall, who returned home soon after, cannot account for the 9 outrage.
