The Chesterfield Cases. CH1ESTEIEDn 1C. 1H., May1-3 25,".-I reached here about noon to-day with Judge Wallace, who came al so to be in readiness to convene the Court of sessions in the morn ing. Solicitor Newton has. been since yesterday preparing his in dlictments for the term. I have had a conversation with him and find that he has not yet'intde out the indictments against Col. Cash, Spofford and Lee. I find here up on inqniry that it is not improba ble that Sheriff Slpofford will ten der his resignation, in which event it is thought that the grand jury will not indict him. Spofford be ill a county officer must first be presented( by the grand jury )efore the solicitor can act, and it seems to be the sentiment of the commu nity that, in consideration of his good record in the past and his failing health, if lie resigns his of' lice lie should not be prosecuted. As to Samuel Lee the indict ment which the solicitor has deter mined to give out is i)roight un11 (et the Common law for an assault with intent to prevent. arrest. This offence is a misdemeanor punisha- I ble with fine or imprisonment in the discretion of the presiding J udge. As state,] above Solicitor New ton has not yet, preparel an inieict ment against Col. C(ash. I am not at liberty to give details at this 'time, but I may say that it is po sible that no indictment -will ie given out aga-inst him at this etrm. JI. K. B. THE BOoTOM SLIDINGi DOwN, The Mississippi is said to be siuh ject to a new danger. Its hottoml is s:id to be moving toward the Gulf of Mexico. Of couirse not t he bottom of the entire leng0,th. but the ooze an( mul for many hundreds of miles is sliding down, -is it were, aid makinig the river sallower at its outlets. Shoul( t his conlflti1nuie. an(l man be unable 1o conltrol it, the( river woul in1 ime be confinedl, as banks would he l0foed at its mouth. Thisj would make a great lake out of' pOrtions1 of Lou isiana anod Texas. Of coulrse new outlets would be formed1, but in the meantime vast changes would occur in the Mis sisippi valley. Giaat cities woutd be surmerged. Lakes larger than Superior or Ontario would1 cover regions now occupied by farms atnd towns. Still th is need not con eern the present generation. It will take many hundreds, if not thousands of years, to effe'ct these alterations, and thlen, perhaps, me chanical science andl human re sources may be so developed as to enable man to overcome, or at least mrodify, thme slow operations of na 1tire.-Demorest. -A little girl sat on the floor, crying. Aifter a while she stopped andl seemed buried in thought. Looking up suddenly, she said; "Mriama, what was i cryin' about ?" "'Because I wouldn't let you go down town." "'Oh yes," and she set uip a howl. -Have your Job work (lone her. To T Citizens of Easley, R. C. AVE YOU 11EARD of that Cheap Dry Goods House OF St!nadlevo &'Ban GREENVILLE, S. c(.
