Williaza Mayfield, 82 years old, the father of ex-gtate Superintend ent of Education W. D. May field and State Senator S. G. Mayfield, $f Barnawell, died in his home at Mayfield post offica, in the. ujper part of this county, Sunday morn migat 2 o'clock, after a lingering illness.gZHe was a native of Tlen nlessee, hut had made upper Greoon rille county his home since the close of the civil w'ar, and wvas one of the leadirig men of that section. His widow is a sister of Capt. A. Blythe, of this city. Mrs. Burgo -and Mrs. Martin, of Indian~ Terri tory, and George R. Mayfield and Miss Kate Mfayfield are his other surviving children. Local Telephone system is the latest on County Covernment Law. 'Tle following is the county gov ermniont law for thuis county aftor this year. It was introduced by Mr. C. E. Robinson. Bt it onactod by the Genoral Ao 8e111)ly of the State of South Car olina: That an act entitled an actto provide for the county gov ornment of the vaieous counties of this State which was passed the regular session of the General As semhly of 1898, and which became a law on the 12tk. day of January 1899, be amended by adding there to a section to be known an sec tion 10, which shall read as fol lows: Section 10. That in the county of Pickens the Sipervisor and tho two commissionors now provided for by law shall have control over the governen tal affairs of said conty. Thoy each bofore ontoring upon tho dischargo of their dutios shall executu a bond in the sum of two thousand dollars with sufli cient surety, in the same manner as now provided for the execution of a bond by the Supervisor. The said board of County Con missioners shall have power to ap poist ano Supervisor in each tOwn shi), and roa(d ovorseers, if they shall doom th gane necessary, and thoso Ihus appointed shall bo exempt from road duty. The said board may also eloct a clerk, at a salary to be fixed by them, not to exceed (no hundrod dollars a year. That in said county all porsons liable to road duty, as now pro Yided by law, shall pay annually a tax 6f ono dollar, which shall be known as the road tax. The coun ty treasurer is herchy authorized and required to collect the same and givo a recoipt therefor. The building are large and mod ern fitted with electric lights; heated with steam, all from its own plant. About thirty neat cot tagos, around are homes for the operatives, niany of whom came fioin Philadelphia; others are na tives. Mr. Biorck tho originator is president and treasurer; Mr. 11.
