The mattresses and covering: are now clean and in good order, but removable covers should be made to protect the mattresses from dirt and rough usage. The rooms used by white prisoners have no toilet facilities or stoves. They should he better equipped so that the whites can be strictly separated from the negroes as is required by law. The entire prisoners' quarters should be screened to protect the inmates from flies and mosquitoes. Only two meals are now supplied. If the dieting fee of 50 cents a day is not sufficient to provide them, the fees should he increased so that three wholesome meals can be served. H. C. BRKARLEY. LAND IN HORRY LOOKS FERTILE I __ Lumber is one of the chief exports of Horry and Marion. There are many large sawmills and logging camps to l>c seen near the highways. Numbers of Conway citizens were constantly at Myrtle Beach ready and willing to aid the party in any way. After the end of the session automobiles of Conway were found standing at Myrtle Beach ready to bring the members hack to Marion and hoard the train for Columbia. The trip 1 ?y autos and by boat was so well managed under leadership and system that the journeys were made without accident or interruption. There are two or three nice towns between Marion and Conway and at these towns floats and banners were flying hearing the words of welcome to the "Independent Republic of Horry" and the towns within her borders. At Gallivants Ferry a big banner floated above the national highway telling the people they had entered Horry county and were welcome on their annual outing and to the business meetings. The handsome residence of Mr. (i. J. Hollidav is near here. He is the father of the young* lady, Miss Flora may Hollidav, who was crowned queen of the Palmafesta at Columbia. There are some, perhaps, who would like to know something of the crop condition in the middle and in the lower sections of the state and what is planted since the invasion of the boll weevil (or "Boiling" weevil) as an old darkey was heard to remark on the way. It is hard to tell much about crops from a car window running lit full speed or looking through ...,4 a 1?." J ciuivminnmit; > aiKi .-onieumes i an injustice to the fanning section is j GROCERY CO. But it appears that crops are much earlier and better in the counties of Marion, Florence, Sumter and upper Horry than here. Certainly the gruond is level and the acreage larger and the crops further advanced. But much land remains implanted, due to the rains, we presume. ."Sot much cotton was soon below Columbia, but what was seen looked a month earlier than here and much better. In Marion and Horry tobacco and corn seem to be the principal crops and we suppose more tobacco has been grown since the advent of the boll weevil than before. In Horry truck farming is carried along extensively in the lower sections. The corn in the upper section of the county looks good, while in the extreme coast section it was not looking so well and many fields appeared to he ruined, due to the constant rains. hand in some sections looked veiy fertile and some of the crops promising. It is the tobacco curing season now and many tobacco houses were ''fired" up and tlie leaf being cured by heat. It is quite an interesting sight for one from the Piedmont section to pass through the Pee Dee section on first trip. It is said the trestle on the A. C. I.., where it crosses the Great Pee Dee is three miles long on account of the river swamps and the sea of water outside- the banks of the river proper. Waters of the Great Pee Dee 1 ise from tlje flow through the hi'l and clay sections and is muddy all the time. I.ittle Pee Dee. the boundary between Marion and Horry and the Waccanmw River, flowing through Horry, are clear as crystal on account of the sandy lands. They are picturesque streams. o Let the Herald fill the need. ENDORSES 1NG PLAN y 6, 1922. >perative Market esident Harding, K Smith, and of men.
