One of the beautiful sights of Washington Is the Shaw aquatic gardens at STenilworth, now threatened with destruction by the Anacostia reclamation project. The gardens, commonly called "the water lily farm," lie across the Anacostia, above Anacostia Island, close to the district boundary line. A car runs from the treasury to the-hamlet of Kenilworth, from which a quarter-mile walk brings one to the cluster of pools or small ponds constituting the farm. The gardens, says the Christian Science Monitor, are the result of the enterprise of W. B. Shaw and his daughter, Mrs. L. Helen Fowler. Their market extends from Portland, Me., to Macon, Ga., and west to Chicago, as far, Indeed, as illy blooms can travel and arrive fresh. The garden con H slats of 19 pools, covering six aeres. It will take about one hundred thousand feet of lumber to complete this structure, and will he quite an addition to that section of the county. Mi\ Little recently purchased a 'planing machine for use at his saw mill, near the corporate limits of tne town. He will use this machinery in dressing the lumber used by him -in his contracts. Besides a large amount of lumber, other materials will be used to more or less extent in the new building at Green Sea. o VOGUE OF HIGH COLLARS It seems a waste c" time to look for anything handsomer in suits than tlie graceful model shown here. J Following is a list of powdered I substances that are found to be effective against chicken lice when ] used as dusts: Arsenic trioxid, barium fluorid, barium tctrasulphid, borax, boric acid, cloves, nephthalene, paradichlorobenzene, sabadilla 1 seeds, sassafras bark, sodium fluorid, flowers of sulphur, and refined sulphur. Only a few of these materials can, however, be considered of any practical value in the control of chicken lice. Arsenic trioxid is too poisonous; barium fluorid, cloves, sabadilla seeds and paradichlorobenzene are too expensive, or not readily available in large quantities; naphthalene is dangerous if applied too freely, and barium tctrasulphid does not kill all the lice. Sodium fluorid is the most practical remedy given in this list. The materials listed below were found to he of no value against chicken lice in spite of popular opinion regarding many of them.
