WORK IS DONE
WITH BIG MIXER
The work of laying the concrete
floors in the new stores of A. C.
Thompson commenced this week, af''ter
securing the crushed stone and :
^Portland cement.
The work is being done by a large
force of hands and the big concrcte
mixer which was recently employed i
in putting down the hard floors of j
-the Farm Implement Company.
The new store's of Mr. Thompson's
are in the building formerly occupied
by the sales stables. A few
"were finished up on Fourth avenue,
and later the old place turned into
nice stores.

Every druggist in town has noticed

They all give tho same reason.
Dodson's Liver Tone is taking its

"Calomel is dangerous and people

who sells it. A large bottle doesn't
cost very much but if it fails to give

Shaw Aquatic Gardens Near Washing,

National Capital.
One of the beautiful sights of Washington
Is the Shaw aquatic gardens at
STenilworth, now threatened with destruction
by the Anacostia reclamation
project. The gardens, commonly
called "the water lily farm," lie across
the Anacostia, above Anacostia Island,
close to the district boundary line. A
car runs from the treasury to the-hamlet
of Kenilworth, from which a quarter-mile
walk brings one to the cluster
of pools or small ponds constituting
the farm.
The gardens, says the Christian Science
Monitor, are the result of the enterprise
of W. B. Shaw and his daughter,
Mrs. L. Helen Fowler. Their
market extends from Portland, Me.,
to Macon, Ga., and west to Chicago,
as far, Indeed, as illy blooms can travel

MS A CONTRACTAT
GREEN SEA
Contractor H. P. Little has undertaken
the erection of the new high
school building at Green Sea. It
will take about one hundred thousand
feet of lumber to complete this
structure, and will he quite an addition
to that section of the county.
Mi\ Little recently purchased a
'planing machine for use at his saw
mill, near the corporate limits of
tne town. He will use this machinery
in dressing the lumber used by
him -in his contracts.
Besides a large amount of lumber,
other materials will be used to more
or less extent in the new building at
Green Sea.

One of the most extraordinary
botanical gardens In the world is that
laid out at an altitude of O.OMO feet,

valley of Aosta.
This garden, established by the late
rector of the hospice, M. Chanoux,
comprises specimens of practically all
mountain flora, whether It grows In
the Alps, the Ralkans, the Carpathians,
the Caucasus, the Pyrenees,
the Himalayas or among the mountains
of America, Japan and New Zealand.
It was begun in 1802. but was not

1807 whon the rector of the hospice intrusted
it to the care of Professor

POULTRY REQUIRES PLENTY I
OF MINERAL FOOD IN DIET
Grit is essential to the health of
'owls and to economy in feeding, j
3rit takes the place of teeth in pre- <
)aring the feed for further diges- i
ion and is required for the proper
reparation of feed in the gizzard.
iVhen the feed is not properly taken
are of in this organ, an undue 1
itrain is thrown on the fowl's sys- i
em, often resulting in disease and <
ilso allowing much of the nutriment
o pass through the'bird's body with>ut
being absorbed. In every pen or
;ard a box of grit should be kept,
vccent investigators have asserted
hat grit is a part of the necessary
eed of a flock, giving the fowls
;trong bones and a bright plumage.
Ordinarily, the hen does not consume
enough lime to form the shells
>f" eggs, if she is laying abundantly,
nless something beside the ordinary
grain feeds is accessible to her.
Dyster shells are very good for this I
purpose. A box of crushed shells
nay be placed before the fowls, allowing
them to eat at will. Old
nortar and fine gravel are also useful
in supplying lime, say poultry
specialists of the United States Department
of Agriculture.
Charcoal readily absorbs gasses,
impurities and acids, and thus acts

PLENTY OF FREE SUNSHINE 1
REDUCES CHOLERA BILL
A few days' work in the pig pens {
and yards scraping disinfecting and j
cleaning is pretty good hog cholera <
insurance, says the United States ,
Department of Agriculture. Strict j
sanitation is the best aid the far-1
mer can give td the work of the!,
hog cholera serum. It is unwise and^
uneconomical to depend entirely up-',
on the sol ium to protect the swine '|
from this costly 'disease. In 1!)1N,']
the farmers paid a serum bill of ]
over $5,000 and they still lost $00,-1,
000,000 worth of pigs. There can!be
no doubt as to the effectiveness I
of the serum treatment, but the sen-J;
sible farmer will do what he can I
with shovel, hoe and disinfectant to I,
remove tlie cause of the trouble. The ,
threat of cholera is always present
so long as there are undrained cesspools
ami wallows. Straw stacks
should never be left from one year
to the next if they are where the
hogs can reach them.* Shelter and
pens should be so constructed that
they may be easily cleaned and exposed
to the sunlight. A few days
devoted to work of this sort in the
fall when the hogs have been taken
from the pens will do much to protect
the herds of another year.
66(> will break a Cold, Fever and I
Grippe quicker than anything we
know, preventing pneumonia.?12-13 j

WHAT WILL KILL CHICKEN <
LICE AND WHAT WILL NOT <
_ ]
Experiments to determine what (
substances are best for exterminate 1
ing or keeping under control chick i
3M lice have been made by the Unit- '
xl States Department of Agricul- <
ture. J
Following is a list of powdered I
substances that are found to be effective
against chicken lice when ]
used as dusts: Arsenic trioxid,
barium fluorid, barium tctrasulphid,
borax, boric acid, cloves, nephthalene,
paradichlorobenzene, sabadilla 1
seeds, sassafras bark, sodium fluorid,
flowers of sulphur, and refined sulphur.
Only a few of these materials
can, however, be considered of any
practical value in the control of
chicken lice. Arsenic trioxid is too
poisonous; barium fluorid, cloves,
sabadilla seeds and paradichlorobenzene
are too expensive, or not readily
available in large quantities;
naphthalene is dangerous if applied
too freely, and barium tctrasulphid
does not kill all the lice. Sodium
fluorid is the most practical remedy
given in this list.
The materials listed below were
found to he of no value against
chicken lice in spite of popular opinion
regarding many of them.
Angelica root, calcium carbonate,
calcium fluorid, calcium hydroxid,'
