In brief, what are the powers of congress ? A few of the duties of congress are: To lay and collect taxes; to regulate commerce with foreign nations md among the several states; to coin money: to establish nostof- | fices; to declare war; to provide and maintain armies and navy; to make laws necessary to execute the powers given in the constitution. 8. What should we know of the amendments to the constitution? The first nine amendments have to do with the early days 01 guvrmmont. and define rights of the people which are now accepted withou* question. These were added to the constitution soon after its ratifica tion by the states, and all at the same time. The tenth amendment preserves to the states all power* not delegated to the United States hv its constitution nor by it prohibited to the people of the states. The eleventh has also to do with states rights. The twelfth provides for the election of president and vice president. The thirteenth prohibits slavery. The fourteenth has reference to' citizenship, what constitute* eligibility for public office, and the validity of debts. The fifteenth states that the right of citizenship is not to bo denied or abridged by the United States or any state on account of race, color cr previous condition of servitude.
