In other words, the widest spacing is the worst system, and any narrowing of the spaces down to inches is an improvement. Below that the crowding may bo injurious. It must be remembered by planter practicing: the thick-spacing svstem that another change from H methods is necessary at the same time. When cotton is space 1 far ;ip:irt it is thinned early. Wben lose spacing is adopted, the thinning must he delayed until comparatively late in the season. If the thinning is dor.e early, vegetative branches are likely to ar>r~ar even when the plants arc thick in the rows, thus offsetting such advantages as might be gained. It is not do :sible to tix any definite time at which thinning should be done but it is cafe to say that the plants should be from 6 to 12 inches hicrh instead of from 2 to 4 inches high, :is has been .customary in the past. Persons who, either by design or because they are unable to .get labor for thinning work earlier, postpone their thinning until late in the season should adopt the singlestalk. close-spacing system. Close spacing and delayed thinning does not mean that there must bo no cultivation until after thinning. Cultivation to control weeds, of course, must be undertaken whenever the development of grass or weeds shows that cultivation is needed. CHAMBER FAILED TO GET TENANT The Chamber of Commerce failed to find a tenant for the dining room of the Grace Hotel. In order that the place might Ik* let out in accordance with the plan devised by the chamber it was necessary for the owner of the hotel to build a new kitchen and pantry for tho dining room.
