PAGE TWO SLEW GIRL AT HER REQUEST, HE SAYS Michigan Man Tells Police How He Strangled Young Telephone Operator ASSERTS VICTIM KNOTTED THE HANDKERCHIEFS Prisoner Pleads Not Guilty and Is Closely Guarded to Pre vent Mob Violence Detroit.?Anson Best, twenty-one years old, of Flint, Mich., confessed according to the police, that he killVera Schneider, nineteen-year-old telephone operator, of Pontine, Mich., last Saturday night. The confession came after several hours of grilling by the authorities of Oakland County, and in it Best says he committed the murder by pulling tight two knotted handkerchiefs the girl took from his pocket, tied herself and placed arcund her neck, and that he did so at her request. "She was discouraged about some thing. She would not say what it was. Finally she asked me if I would kill her. She said jshe wanted to die." Best says he never mot the girl bo fore and that he tried to dissuade her from her set pm-pose of ending it all. He says she put her arms around him and kissed him, begging to be killed, saying she was tired of life and wasted to die. At first, he states, he only pulled the hankerchiefs a little, but later put his whole strength to the task after further entreaties on her part. Best when arraigned before Circuit Judge Rockwell pleaded not guilty. During the arraignment the Court House was guarded, mob violence being feared.
