A land "bo~m" may collapse suddenly. , SELECT THE SEED FOR SWEET POTATOES From time to time we have issued 1ettei*s regarding- the erection of storage houses for the sweet potato, and have endeavored to show the. importance of proper handling of this important Southern crop. We will deal in this letter with the selection of seed to increase the yield and reduce the loss duo to disease by seed selection. Potatoes are an important, food crop and are surpassed in value only 1 * - uy corn in tliis respect. There is no food crop of the United States that suffers so great a loss relative tr its value as the sweet potato, which suffers an annual loss of at least 50 per cent in its yield. There a re several ways to reduce i 'his loss, and one of the most important ways is by fall sec! selection. Seed potatoes should he selected fiom Fields planted with vine cuttings, as potatoes grown from cuttings a e usually free from disease. Clo over your field and carefully pick I e plants which show the qualities that are most desirable. He fore digging examine the main stem just i b ve the. potatoes to see that it i not blackened inside by stem-rot, and discard any suspicious hills. Black-rot, another very destructive disease, may be found on the vine.s just above the soil line and downward,, causing a- black rotted appearance of the afflicted stc?m. On tiro potato it appears as black circular ' spots, and it rapidly increases in storage. Only those potatoes that show no signs )f disease, are smooth, well formed, and are from productive j plants should be stored for seed | These selected potatoes should be | / .li * ' % careiuny nanuicd, placed in small "~ baskets or crates and stored in a well tl ventilated place as far awy from the c, other potatoes as possible.
