This is the day of "do" and not '"talk of doing:." o The wise farmer will raise plenty of supplies at home and raise the money crops as a surplus. o_ There is but little fruit this year in Horry County. Therefore save all of the little that there is. o Our desire for improvement js what spurs us on. Man tries to do his best and uses his weak way to the best advantage in the long run. There is a satisfaction in making what we do efficient,?and that means that our work is effective and brings the results that we reasonably expect from it. o The planting of wheat is growing into a big thing in Horry County, just as we knew it would. Hut there aie many farmers who have not yet seen the light. Those who have not tried it ought to find out what their neighbors in other parts of the county are doing and thus find out what it is possible for them to do now that we have a flour mill running practically all of the time. o One of the most interesting things Koing on in this county today is the building of the national highway from this noint toward Galivants Ferry. The people of other sections will come in for their share of good work later on, but just now the people on the way to Galivants Ferry have something over and above the other people and something that ought to bring pride to each one of them. o Owing to the rapid advance of the boll weevil into South Carolina, it i* oi.ly a question of time when the faimers of Horry County will have to depend on something else beside*rotton for a money crop. Not all of the farmers of the county depend cotton even now, but many id them know how to raise cotton and plant it every year. In place of cotIon there is nothing better than the raising of live stock. Already the farmers are waking up to the bip money there is to be made in raisinp hogs and cattle in this county. Y. 1 i * | FARMERS SHOULD COMBINE. , Pah tor Herald:? Dear Sir?Will you please indulge ! me for a little space in the interest of ' the tobacco grower ? The market has opened and it is a plain case that the buyers intend to rob us of this crop. They have done this about every fourth year ever since we have been planting it in South Carolina. ' and we have been tamely submitting ' * without any protest, but can wo af- ( ford to give them this crop? There ? is certainly no logical reason why to- > bacco should not be worth just as 1 j much as last year. It has cost us far 1 more to raise than ever before. If 1 wc let it go at present prices it means ! financial ruin to many of us. 1 I would suggest that the farmers hold a meeting at the Court House I and discuss the situation. I The reason the Seaboard Airline does not come across the Pee Dee into Horry County with another railroad, is no doubt because that com- j pany knows the Atlantic Coast Line branch line to Aynor, which it can easily extend on to Marion; and in case the Seaboard's line should come in, then the Atlantic Coast Line would run an extension to Marion and compete in the same section. This is a condition that, works against the interest of Horry County and which may continue for a long time. The Coast Line should go ahead in the interest of the people of a wide section who need an outlet to the markets of the country and not wait to be forced to take action by the enterprise of another company.
