The only candidates were Messrs. A. C. Thomp ' on and J. W. Little, and the voting was very light. Mr. Thompson received 33 votes and Mr. Little 34. 4* SHORTAGE OF ICE. There was no ice for sale at the local plant last week, nor the first of this week, owing to the illness of the proprietors, having been taken with the influenza several days before that. He went over the top one day and had shot twice taking as good aim at the Huns as he could, when he was struck in the head by a machine gun bullet which fortunately had spent most of its force when it struck. Hut it knocked him down and out and during the same operation he was hit in nearly the same place by another bullet. He was sent to the hospital in England where he spent a month or more recovering from these wounds. -o GOOD TITLE NEEDED. Some people who thought they had perfect titles for their lands found out they had serious defects in it when they tried to get money from the Federal Land Hank of Columbia. This shows how important it is thai the owner of land should find out a scon as possible about any flaw that J may exist in his title and take steps to Clear it. up. On the bulletin board at the towr hall yesterday there was written across it a statement that there ar13d absent from the Burroughs Iligh School, while only 14 are re ported sick by the doctors, and thi was followed by a low of questio points. If these figures are correct i' shows that all of the absent except the fourteen sick ones, are stayino at home because they are afraic they will catch the flu. A colored employee^Mdt the ' sajir I mill plant of Andersen . was struck by a falling tree last Saturday morning. His brains were dashed out by the force of the blow and he was instantly killed. The accident took place in the timber woods where the men were sawing down trees to be cut into saw logs. This tree was about to fall and the men sang out in time for the ; others to get out of the way. Cochran and another hand ran off to one j side and were sitting on a fallen (tree when, as the falling tree struck another and glanced off, the body of (the tree was deflected and struck | Cochran in the head.
