A recent investigation coni ducted in the Bellevuc Hospital, New | York, disclosed the fact that of 251) i alcoholic patients examined sixtyeight per cent, more than half, began to drink before twenty-one years of age. As a result physicians all over the country refuse to prescribe alcohol under any condition. As has been shown many acquire the alcoholic habit before attaining maturity. There are many ways in which this habit has been acquired, hut perhaps the commonest form has i been through the medium of a pa-1 tent medicine containing a great per rentage of this deadly poison. Beef ; wine, and iron for instance, is usual, ly given to those convalescing from a severe illness. This is a favorite preparation given to children and has probably done more to develop | the alcohol habit than the average J 'person imagines. Probably 4,000 of the 4,559 local exemption boards have completed their organization, giving serial num lers to the cards within their districts and filed certified copies oi these numerical lists. The office of! 1 rovost Marshal General Crowdi r; had received 3,000 lists up to early' today and undoubtedly hundreds more are in the mail. It was stated a'uthoratively that as soon as the last board had reported to the adjutant general of the \ State, the federal government could j begin the drawing. The fact that all numerical lists are either in Wash-f ington or in-the mail will he suf-1 ficient. It will not bo necessary for' all to reach Washington. It couni tcracts the efficiency of the iron and makes the condition worse. A .sick person woum De iar oettcr off tt given just plain beef. The reason for the fallacy of beef, wine, and iron, is efficient is that the alcohol ;t | contains imparts a feeling of stimu-, lation and quickens the heart action, a temporary condition lasting as long as the alcohol affects* the senses. That is why -one must use such preparations continuously, so that the artificial stimulation may be kept up. The result often brings on a case of alcoholism. It would be more beneficial in j such cases to use a natural iron j preparation free from the dangers of alcohol or other habit-forming diugs. j For those who may be weak, anae- ! mic, run down, or suffering from; stomach, kidney or bladder trouble, or poor impoverished blood, an iron tonic of known purity is exceptional. It may be necessary to draw approximately 7,000 numbers to accomplish this result. ( The fact that officials are withhold ing information as to the actual nun. ber necessary to draw, however, indicates that some plan for simplifying the drawing and reducing the mechanical task has been evolyqd. . . It has been estimated, that at,least 687,000 men will be needed to fill ui? J the regular army, National Guarn; and first increment of the national j army. The federal government j stops with distribution of the quotas j by States, however, leaving to the State authorities the task of dividing the total property among the i counties and making the actual' credi it to each district for'the war volun-1 teers it has already furnished. /. f Records Open to Public. Another point that came up todav was the appeal of various papers for permission to publish names of men exempted and the reasons for exernp t'on. Officials said this had already* , been given. The registrations prp vide that the records of the exemption boards shall be open to the pub- , j lie,, including the affidavits filed by j ' o: in behalf of any men an<l the action taken by the board. The newspapers of the large population centers of the country have encountered difficulties in their ef101 ts to arrange for publication of the names of men in the order drawn. In some cases papers would have to publish 500,000 nair.es. It has been suggested that the result of j Drives Out Malaria, Builds Up System The Old Standard general strengthening tonic.
