injt> that alcohol is of no value in
j medicine, either as a drug' or a stim|
ulant. A recent investigation coni
ducted in the Bellevuc Hospital, New
| York, disclosed the fact that of 251) i
alcoholic patients examined sixtyeight
per cent, more than half, began
to drink before twenty-one years of
age. As a result physicians all over
the country refuse to prescribe alcohol
under any condition.
As has been shown many acquire
the alcoholic habit before attaining
maturity. There are many ways in
which this habit has been acquired,
hut perhaps the commonest form has i
been through the medium of a pa-1
tent medicine containing a great per
rentage of this deadly poison. Beef ;
wine, and iron for instance, is usual,
ly given to those convalescing from
a severe illness. This is a favorite
preparation given to children and
has probably done more to develop |
the alcohol habit than the average J

Probably 4,000 of the 4,559 local
exemption boards have completed
their organization, giving serial num
lers to the cards within their districts
and filed certified copies oi
these numerical lists. The office of!
1 rovost Marshal General Crowdi r;
had received 3,000 lists up to early'
today and undoubtedly hundreds
more are in the mail.
It was stated a'uthoratively that
as soon as the last board had reported
to the adjutant general of the \
State, the federal government could j
begin the drawing. The fact that all
numerical lists are either in Wash-f
ington or in-the mail will he suf-1
ficient. It will not bo necessary for'
all to reach Washington.

for the fallacy of beef, wine, and
iron, is efficient is that the alcohol ;t |
contains imparts a feeling of stimu-,
lation and quickens the heart action,
a temporary condition lasting as
long as the alcohol affects* the
senses. That is why -one must use
such preparations continuously, so
that the artificial stimulation may
be kept up. The result often brings
on a case of alcoholism.
It would be more beneficial in j
such cases to use a natural iron j
preparation free from the dangers of
alcohol or other habit-forming diugs. j

stomach, kidney or bladder trouble,
