When tempted tG become a gener-1 al trouble maker it is the best to re- ! frain. o Germany in her greed for power; may lose all in the end, and great will be the 'oss t .? roof. Ono system of Spring and Sum- j nxer fever is an aching of the joint"--: that will not come off. o Any great work must be accom- j plished carfeully, and cannot succeed j any other way. ? The success of some people exists!' only in their minds and never goes' anywhere else. | o !, it is a sad fault in human nature j to want to see the other fellow suf- ' fer misfortune,?sometimes. M o We are glad to say that the farm-!' ers of this section of the State are!1 < 11 interested in other things besides the progress of the courts. Some people need to go back to, their school days and begin all over by adding two and two together. o Modern fashions for women now tend to limited costumes, but some how the cost has not been reduced. What is saved in one place is more than taken up in another. \l o Most people improve in looks as you get better acquainted with them, j Now and then you find a man who gets uglier every time you see him. | o This year is the time to save every r thing that can be used for food. "We a hope that results will not be so bad p as we expect; but it is best to be on f gnard and prepared. Can every C apple and peach; 'put up stores of ( oaaaed tomatoes/ green com, and d green field peds. Let the people > prepare Srtd this country will be able to weather the storm without starnation staring it in the face. W?' 'What use to spend time and energy 1 i n building up any business and then ^ fet careless ami throw away the irofits ? This country is not at war for nere glory. Principles of liberty I vhich were understood in Washingon's time are to the fore now in the nind of every man and woman. This country means to win. o? There has been so much change ;n ;he fashions for woman's wear that t seems to us the only thing to do I ifter a while will be to let them wear j >ants like the men and be done with { t. t o 5 The policy of Uncle Sam will be c ;o take soldiers who will shodt and tot run. Those who are gifted with < jreat powers of locomotion will not j ae wanted. 1 Now when the war gets on in * earnest, unless abundant food crops lire raised in every nook and corner, i it will be easy to make buckle and 1 tongue meet; for there will be almost nothing to eat. Take precau- , lions in time. Plant every foot of land in something that can be stored . up to eat and remember that there < is no doubt in the world about the , ? price being high. The fanners have it in their power to do great things for the country and to begin it now. o 1 Carelessness and extravagance arc { among the greatest foes to the sue- < cess of anv business. There ar tv* , kinds of extravagance and wastefulness, or rather it can be divided into two kinds owing to the place where,' it is practiced: In one kind the pro-j' prietor is careful and saving in the;' business office and management, j1 while lie or his family throw it all i' away in the household and domestic \ nviMiii iramanfe f li - i tlin Kncinn^u I U I 1 Ull^l IIIVM LO ? UUOIMV after a time cannot supply enough profit to meet the demands made on them; while in the o'/ier, the "spendtlirittness" takes place in ine ousiness management itself and it goes to the dogs quickly. o COPY SUMMONS FOR RELIEF (Complaint Not Served.) Caldwell's Syrup Pepsin the Family Laxative for Many Years. i Mrs. Aug. Doellcfeld of Carlyle, 11., recently wrote to Dr. Caldwell it Montkello, 111., that she has used 3r. Caldwell's Syrup Pepsin in her lome for a number of years. an<' vould not be without it, us with it ;he has been able to keep her foui hildren in perfect health. Dr. Caldwell's " Syrup Pepsin is o combination of simple laxative herbs vith pepsin that acts on the bowels n an easy, natural way, and reguates the action of this most import?nt function. Nearly all the sickness :o which children are subject is trs'*0 ible to bowel inaction, and a mild iependable laxative, such as Dr. t arn * well's Syrup Pepsin should have a > place in every family medicine ch^st. * It is pleasant to the taste and child- * ren like it. and take it readily, while t it is equally effective for adults. * Dr. Caldwell's Syrup Pepsin is sold ( in drug- stores everywhere for fifty 1 cents a bottle. Carolina has a p-nod I strong* bunch this year. Probably the I; weakest spot will be in the pitching, i but the boys here on the campus are j extremely optomistic over the pros- i pects for a winning team. Under tho ] careful tutelage of Coach Fostor sev- < eral of the pitching prospects have developed rapidly and will be no sur- \ prise to the students here if we have s two or three good boxmen before the ] season closes. From Newberry the j team will go to Spartanburg where t they will play Wofford on Saturday, i Wofford usually has a good team and , is considered a pennant prospect each i year. . Dr. E. O. Brown, professor of church history and comparative re- , ligions at Vanderbilt University, delivered four addresses before the stu- . dent body on Wednesday and Thurs- 1 day of last week. He was unable to deliver his first scheduled lecture on Tuesday night because of missing a ] train connection in Charlotte. His lec- , tures were enjoyed very much indeed bv thp wholo stiwlont hrwlv u? was evidenced by the large attendances wnih greeted him a verydcl23423233 j which greeted him at every lecture. , At the last meeting of the moot- j court held Thursday night Dean John P. Thomas gave a very interesting ] lecture to the law association. His ] subject was "Book Plates." The lec- ) ture was the same one recently de- ] livered before a teachers meeting Kelei in Columbia and was enjoyed ] very much indeed. There was also a j short trial of a ckVil case. The Horry Club recently had their < photograph made for the Annual this t year. It seems to have pleased most ? )f the members of the Club as we s understand Clevy Brown has in an ^ >rder for a dozen copies of same and e Patrick Hooks has the photographer 1 inishing his individual photograph c ,vith a political expression on his t 'ace. Patrick says that he is a candi- \ late for the House from Horry and v hat when he again sets foot on Hor- t y soil that he is going after Capt. t A'alter L. and "Uncle" Waterman vith his sleeves up. We wish for /ou all the good things you can possibly wish for yourself. Let us suggest, in view of the recent controversy appearing in the Field that vou push the Cattle Tick Eradication 3.1 the soft pedal. Howard Little was seen over about the Post Office recently. It is 1 strange how Dock Singleton and Howard can room on the campus and never he seen by any one except their professors, and possibly a certain co-ed who has some classes with Singieton. These boys are two of the most studious on the campus, and are surely making good. Wilson Lowrimore continues to come down and look the boys over. He came down the other night and after going over the political situation in South Carolina for the next forty-four years, announced that he was making arrangements to try and be in Conway this coming summei [luring the tobacco season. Wilson says he knows as much about tobacco now as he does about poiiti \s and if such be true then the buyers who invade the Horry markets each year should go way off and take a hack seat. We hope Wilson can make the arrangements to follow our tiibc back to Horry in June where lie can keep the market on top and help us make Horry the biggest tobacco market in the State. With the return of 'warm weather many of the boys have been seen ?oing towards the gym. We are looking forward to the' State High School Oratorical Congest which is to he he'd in Columbia t little later on. Here's hoping that iome schoool in Horry will send a vinner.
