It is a certain fact that most of the soils of Horry County need lime to correct the acid conditinos thai exists in them. 1 find that at least 75 per cent of our soil is acid and the only way to correct this is by the application of lime in some form. There are several forms of lime hut the most universally used is the Ground Limestone. This form is cheaper and is very fine making it available both for the farmer and the soil. We should use at least two tons per acre, and under no conditions would we advibe the use of less than one ton per acre. It should be applied early in the fali foi* urwl fliof . >uv>>va ?.Iv< biiut k/l l/attLUAl/ after the ground has been thoroughly broken. Don't plough it under but harrow it in the top of the soil. Lime acts in the following ways: It acts on the texture of the soil, rendering it more friable, and exerting a certain binding effect on loose soils. It decomposes the minerals containing potash and other food constituents, and renders them available for the plant's needs. It further decomposes organic matter, and promotes the important process of nitrification. It neutralizes sourness, and prevents the formation of poisonous compounds in the soil. It increases the capillary condition of the soil, prevents fungoid diseases and promotes the growth of more nutritive herbage in pasture-land.
