THURSDAY, APRIL 2 0, 1916 He what you are, say what you mean . o No character either good or bad is built by one action only. o Idleness is the breeder of crime and desolation. o The early bird in looking after the worm must avoid being caught itself. o The more you are lazy the more! you will be. o Change of diet for a day or two is better than tonic. o Remember you do not know a man just because you thsrk you do. o It is a good rule never to say any thing about a man behind his back that you would riot say to his face. Building is costly at this time owing to the increased price of all materials. o It is plain that President Wilson does not mean to allow a little ground less fear rush this country into war. ??o A loss of temper amounts to nothing' more than n loss r?f nnnrov tViiif might bo applied to bettor purposes. o Actions founded on truth and honesty will have the support of the community in the long run. No man is hated more than the .Judas who is generally present in every community. o The Mexicans will not stop the course they have taken until they are just about wiped off the face of the earth. The best remedy you ever saw for that lazy, tired feeling that comes on Spring, is real, old time, hard and unremitting labor. Try it. ??<? About the only thing that is really any good about a Spring tonic is the bitter taste. o Why will people always ask you why and never put this question to their own minds? He who puts the question to his own mind is a thinker nd will be in position to advise others rather than have to seek knowledge from others who have thought -it out. Wmm Some people who claim every day that they are sick need nothing in the world but to be compelled to work and take exercise. o The rule with some is to treat every man as an angel until the contrary appears; while with others the rule is to regard every man as a rascal until he is proven to be otherwise. o Wars in Europe may come and go but this country will be safe so long as her people raise plenty of supplies which the people of the warring countries will be obliged to have. i: The campaign for the Governor's office this Summer will be as bitter and hotly waged as it ever was; lor already Cole L. Blease is making j ready for the fray. o William Jennings Bryan stands hopelessly ruined as to any political1 hopes he may have. His course in regard to the European war was enough to show. o It does not take long to get into a war but a powerful length of time to get out of it. This must he remembered while peace still waives the olive branch over this country. o Many a man has gone into a dispute in the space of one minute ami got himself tangled up into difficulties from which ho could not extricate v.w. ,i.i 1II UIKU1A * I LI I I 11 K tl HMIf 111*' l I 1111'. () Without energy no work ran be done. Therefore as Spring comes on get rid of the laziness that comes with it and call out the. reserve forces that you will find within you. o If this paper is giving you good service as a weekly newspaper, please do not hesitate to tell your neighbor so and refuse to lend him your paper for that reason because you need your copy yourself. Make him subscribe and help us out. Any man who will make out to your face that he likes you and then when behind your back is ready to say unkind things about you, is deceitful in his mind and character and he will not do to trust. o As there is a difference in the abilities of men, consider this fact before rendering judgment in any contest. The widow who put in her mite was appreciated by the Master just as much as the rich man who put a great sum in the contribution box. o The effort of the civic leagues composed of the ladies of the small towns al' over this State is to make the towns in which they live more sani tary, and therefore more conducive to | health, ami au well as other tilings, more pleasing to the eye. Conway has a live civic league and the league should be encouraged by all the means at hand. o The man who has his own business and means to attend to it finds no time whatever for meddling with the j business of others. The man who is| constantly going into the affairs of others interferring where he has no business to do it, is apt to have no but.v-.ess of his own that amounts to anything, and if he has any business at all, he will soon be without any. o A large fortune was never built to j i.i8c long ?.t; credit. Those who .succeed in life are those who save all 1 that they can and build their business; on a solid foundation of "pay as you pro" p'an. Debt never really resulted in any great benefit to anybody. When a man borrows money to start1 a business it will be apt to get the best of him sooner or later. No mat-j tor how hard he works and how much I t be saves, interest is working against' him all the time. Build as you go on the basis; of fully paid and nothing owing. o Fast's Body Found. Birmingham, Ala., April 14.?'The body of Henry D. Fast, who last Tuesday shot and seriously wounded Young A. Neal, was found in a vacant lot in West Fnd. There is a bullet wound in the left arm and another in the head. The police believe Fast killed himself. The Herald's candidates' column was opened recently and other cards for this department are solicited. * Mr. J. F. Haigler and Miss Drucille, spent last Saturday in town. C., April 15.?One man is dead, one of the largest lumber plants of the South destroyed, and millions of feet of timber in ashes as the result of forest fires raging in widely separated points of eastern North Carolina, according to reports reaching this city tonight. Carter, a farmer, was overtaken by the fire while walking along the public road and was burned to death. Carter's death is the only fatality. One home is known to have been destroyed, that of Purdie Hull, and fear is expressed for many more in the region being devasted by the flames. The fire in Cumberland wus still raging at (I o'clock this afternoon and had burned an area ten miles long. Hundreds of fire fighters from all parts of the county have been summoned to assist in checking the flame, NOTICE OF QFJir GRATIG CLOG MEETINGS i uimiui 'i. lu me consiiuuion aim rules of the Democratic Party of South Carolian, notice is hereby given thai tiie various Democratic Clubs of lit rrv Counly sire hereby called to meet at their usual meeting- places on the last Saturday in April, that being the 129til day of said month, for the purpose of reorganizing, electing d( 'egates to County Convention, ami for the transaction of such other business as may properly come before such meetings. This should be applied after plowing or working with a spade, and distributed evenly os or the surface and later worked in | with a hoe and rake. On many soils it is advisable to apply . commercial fertilizer, especially phosphate, in addition to the manure. An'application fo 300 to 000 pounds of acid phos; pkate to the acre is usually suflicient. | If additional potash is needed, which i is often the case with sandy soils, this may be economically supplied in the j form of wood ashes. If the wood ashI es are unleached they should be distributed over the garden, using 1,000 pounds to the acre. If they have been I wet, or leached, 2,000 pounds should . bo used. An application of 100 pounds to the acre of nitrate of soda may be used in the spring to start the plants be fore the nitrogen in the manure has become available. It should be borne in mind that commercial fertilizers will not yield good results unless the soil is well supplied with humus. Sod or other vegetation which has over giwwn ;i vs.i11-?i? n ?poi may uc used to advantage.
