THURSDAY, MARCH 2, 1916 ... _ At' \ system pays in everytning you no. o Truth sometimes has to hide her face but it is only temporary. ? ?o The farmers business when handled in a business way profits him more. o Every chance is the last chi nee to the old maid. o The hook worm has been the excuse of hundreds of idle men long enough. o Inventions were never worked out in a few minutes as the unitiated would be apt to think. o It is a mighty hard law indeed that rascality cannot cicumvent in some way. First try to understand the trouble and you will be better prepared to ap__ i i piy a remedy. ?o Things are often made worse than they were by applying the wrong remedy. ?> Don't shoot until you think you have a spot to aim at, and then be . sure you hit the spot. Kvcry citizens owes something to his country for the great privileges his country allows him to hold and enjoy. (i The savings banks of this country have done a good work among the people by teaching them to lay by small savings from time to time. o What has become of the old time doctor who placed the remnants of all medicines in one big jar and then doped this out to the man whose disease he could not diagnose? n Awnings are beautiful and serve a good purpose when they are new; but when they become rags they add anything else but beauty to the business street of a town or city. o A debt on an honest man Is worth niUCh more tO VOU than On#? Hfru inwO I the- richest rascal in the country. Honesty is the best security . o The United States may he drawn into Bedlam says the President, hence he advises that this country prepare to defend its honor. More than half of the world has pone mad and the alternative of war may at any moment fucc the United States. Let it be understood first, last, and all of the the time that this country wants no war; but that is no reason why the United States should not be ready to defend herself at any time the necessity arises. u This country cannot be prcperea for war unless she trains her citi-1 citizens as soldiers. Every man owes this as a duty to his country in return for the blessings of liberty he now enjoys and his hope that he may leave this as an inheritance to his children after him. o A few years ago swamp land on which the timber had been sold was considered as worse than worthless for the reason that the owner had to pay taxes on it and would get noth1 rr fn L Vx % rv/ ? - " -? ? It now appears that it is valuable for Kiowing more timber, as some of the lands are being cut over now the second time in the last fifteen years. o In the schools of to-day it would seem that the teachers are selected from the best young men and women of the country; they claim to be trained for the special work in which they are engaged. They arc paid reasonable salaries for the work they have to do or are supposed to do. What puzzles us more than anything else is the way the teaching is conducted. The boys and girls are given lessons to learn at home which they arc expected to recite in class the next day, and the children are required to learn those lessons at home win re the parents are expected by the teacher to help in the exercises fne children go to school for the pur pose of reciting and not for the purYl SO (ii lwim(T f<nw/h? ? rx' * 1 1 1A 1IV I C i v something about this that we know l.) bo wrong. If men and won.en ai\ hirctl and paid salaries to do a certain thing, then it is not fair for the v.rents to have to do that work am a r.d the children to the scaool hous" ;ust for the purpose of letting the teachers see how well they learned the lessons at home the night before. AY. that the parents gain is the lack of the worry of the children about the house during the day, but this is really no benefit,- for it is at school that a boy or girl learns- meanness that he or she would never get acquainted with at home, and this is admitted though it is a hard fact to consider. We wonder and wonder just what has become of the old fashioned teacher who took the boy all the way from the alphabet to the higher studies without the father or mother being called on to show him a single thing. The examples were then worked out at the school house and other exer cises were done that took the pupil swiftly along- the paths of knowledge. Only a shaking up perhaps would provide a remedy for the condition oi affairs that seems to exist in some of the schools. o TOBACCO GUANO 400 Baas Plant Bed Guano at $3.00 oer bag cash? 1 n AAA ' ? iu.uuu varas uanvass, best! grade? 385 Bags Blue Rose Rice?I SPECIAL PRICES TO HORRY CUSTOMERS?
