I SEVERAL THOUSANDS EXPECT TO ATTEND I I V/!!! Cc a Great Convention of Layman to Study Rela, tior.s of Church. 1 ; Throe tVimrmd men arc expected to meet in Colrmbij., February 6-9th. | It %il be a treat Convention of Laymen of all denominations, met to I study the relations of the church to 1 * pactions throughout the. \vOrkl. Churches &r6 composed cf laymen; laymen support the churches; laymen support the missionary enterprises of the church?now laymen will meet to survey the field, to loorn what is being done, ami whati ou^ht to be donts Ahl?> speakers will' address the UiylYTOVT and on themes | that arc OOn.polling to their interest j t<r\d timeliness. Such addresses are | distinctively worth while and would repay a long* trip; but along with the information and the appeal there Is other benefit?a broader outlook, quickened interest, stimulus to more acffSve participation in tin? work of t'.ie local church as the source of power. That is worth reflecting on. The lay- i men are not undertaking any new I 'king* they are just trying to see. It pL is true, probably, that most laymen waive been rather half-hearted in their j \fforts because thev knew but little or I* f u rl e work < f the. church beyond tno JrMinuay sermon ami the weekly prayiT er-jnocting. Such a Convention as, that in Columbia wPl bring to laymen when they are most receptive a view of the world as a religious oppor-1 Utility. Rut there will ho much more; for the church has problems at home, and must study these problems, as j church liabilities. Social problems in | fllC I'finirottnil fitinu - v. v ^ WM VIVIVO) 4 I ?-)VlilV V> UUt " plexing subject, must be solved. But! the church must infuse into ail re'a-1 lions the spirit of the gospel. Lay-' men as stud* '-?g as well as ministers, j and a free discussion led by men who are in touch with those things, must prove greatly beneficial. And the individual?what should be his at-, titudc? Such questions will be ilium-( ^ned by intelligent discussion. Read the program. It fairly grips you in its suggestiveness. Our religious opportunity is a big one; but it, consists not so much in getting more men into the membership of our | churches as it does in developing the churches as an efficient factor in the life of a work-a-day world. ^ All roads have offered special rates, and good rates arc offered by Colmbia boarding-houses. The County Chairman in almost every County have arranged for special coaches to take their delegation to the Convention, all delegates leaving Monday morning, Feb. 7th, arriving in Columbia in time to register and be assigned to their hotels or boarding-houses before time for the evening session of the conference. o P.
