[ EIGHT 1 HORRY SUMMER SHOOL FOR TEAGHERS ? % ' * J To be Held in Conway Beginning June 7th For a Term of Four Weeks. Some time ago T received a letter from the State Sunt, of Education and he said that the time was not far when the State board of Education would not approve an application from a Rural Graded School where a third-grade teacher had been employed and he suggested that all third grade teachers who expected to do Rural Graded School work next year make a special effort to raise their grade by next fall when the application will bo sent in. The State Board of Education has had a bill before the Legislation for several terms asking for a State Board of Examiners. When this is obtained almost every third grade teacher in the State will be eliminated. The people are voting taxes, lengthening the term of their school, ad- ! vancing their pupils and therefore the j places where a low grade teacher can j work are becoming fewer each year. J A large persentage of the Horry| teachers hold low grade certificates, but there are lots of real live earnest! workers among them. All they need is better equipment. My constant efforts have been to improve the efficiency of the Horry teachers and then use them in the Horry schools as far as possiHe. When I received this letter from the Superintendent 1 began to work for some immediate help for the teachers. The best provisions that I can make is a good Summer school. 1 have the financial side arranged and now I am arranging for the faculty. We hope to begin about June 7th for a term of four weeks and have a Summer School here at Conway second to none in the State except Winthrop. The value of a Summer School depends largely on the course that is j offered. I find that in the summer j schools held here in the past that j primary work and methods were almost ignored. I find that the rural teachers are more deficient in this line of the work.
