News of a dastardly attempt to commit murder at the plant of the Hammer Lumber Co., in Little River Neck, near the North Carolina line, reached Conway the latter part of| last week. Apiong the force of employees was a colored mechanic who came there to work from New Bern, N. C. One night last week some one called at the edge of the yard. The mechanic opened the door and saw five white men standing together and was suspicious that their intentions were not good, as he turned to leave the door one of the men fired on him with a shot gun and he was severely wounded in the leg. Blood hounds could not be secured at the time or the attempted as-assins would have been trailed out and caught, but as it is this ciime will go unpunished. It is to be deplored that Horry County has any such people in its bounds and it is to be hoped that they will take warning as the majority of the people are of a better class an J will not stand for such conduct, but there are a number of citizens thmselves who wil: no. wait for authorities to tak . charge, but will help track down such criminals themselves o Irish Potato Crop. It became apparent last week that tha irish potato crop in soma sections of the countyfwould be cut orf first by the drouth and next by the sudden Clflfwlc \1 iri'1 l/> Unool. This unprecedented bad luck will have its effect on the business conditions at this season of the year. o Scare About Over. Some months ago several cases of smallpox were discovered, mostly in the colored residents section of Conway, though some cases were reported in the white residence section. For several weeks but little attention was paid to these, but later the health authorities got busy and general vaccination was enforced. At this time we find that the scare is almost entirely over, those who had the disease hai recovered and vaccination has apparently done the rest, combined with the warm weather which always helps to stamp it out. . , pirn * 4? The ground was strewn with more than 500 German dead. "The weather having improved, our troops on the slope of Notre Dame do Lorette made and attack which succeeded brilliantly. We have taken the German fortified works called "The White Wav' on the only one of the five southern ridges of the Lor-] ettee hill still partially in the hands of the enemy. "From this point the Germans, with their mitralleuses, were hampering our advance, as also was the case on 1110 plateau south ot" Souchez. "The entire Lorette hill and the lesser ridges which the enemy had defended fiercely for more than six months are therefore in our power. Tni addition we have captured that section of Ablnin St. Nazaire which linked! "The White Way' works to the north-! orn end of the village still occupied by I the enemy. "In this fighting we captured more than 250 prisoners, several of them1 officers. We also took a can nee of the enemy." "Then enemy replied to our success her with a very violent bombardment They have not, however, counterattacked. 'The day was uneventful on the rest of the front." Closing of Private School. The selet private school for youngboys and girls conducted by Mrs. Maude M. Snider. at the beautiful Snider residence on Kingston Lake, came to the successful close of the second term last Friday, with an entertainment and a juvenile picnic. The little pupils all enjoyed the exercises and quit their studies more in love with their teacher than ever. o CONWA Y-M ULLINS GAM E ONE OF THE BEST OF SEASON The game of baseball between Mullins and Conway, played on the local diamond Thursday of last week, was considered one full of interest and enthusiasm from the very start. The local team played at her best throughout the game as did the visiting team. The Conway boys showed good practice, and there was only a few bad plays made, but their greatest difficulty was shown by their feeble batting. Love, for Mullins allowed but few hits, and in the relief pitching or Rogers in the seventh inning, Conway men were powerless to hit the ball due to his speed. The game was more interesting along about the close for the visitors made hard efforts to increase their score, but to no avail. The final score gave Mull ins 0 and Conway 7, which shows that the locals were given a hard fight and a close "rub" for the game. Among the "loyal" who came over from Conway last Friday to attend the ball game, the Enterprise noted the following persons: Mr. and Mrs. M. CJ. Anderson, and their guest, Miss Marrie Morrow, of Toronto, Canada; Miss Mary Epps, of Spartanburg, Miss Mary Dusenbery, Mr. L. I). Ma(Jrath, Senator Hal Fuck, W. P. Hardwick, Dr. J. A. Norton, A. W. Barrett, S. P. Hawes, T. J. Bell, A. H. Long, Hon. J. A. McDermott, J. S. Battle. Hon. E. J. Sherwood, Olin Watson and nth ors. It was a fine bunch of folk and they seemed to have enjoyed the visit very much, and while they regretted the defeat of their home team, they enjoyed the game and went home happy. Quite a number of the visitors were entertained in the homes of our citizens during the evening, and altogether Conway's visit to her cousinsacross-the-Poe Dee was a mutual pleasure.?Mullins Enterprise. > I ?as No. 6.
