Make all Checks or Drafts payable to The Horry Herald, or H II. Woodward, Conway, S C Ill Ii?DAY, SKIT. 4th.. 1913. Those who attend the conferences fur the common gocd are not the only oneL who are working every day of their lives for the common gocd cf humanity. Tn every neighborhood of South Carolina will be found men and women who are making their every thought and action tend to the same end. * * ? Contentment is a thing wanted by many. There aro some who seem to have it. They who seem to have it spend their days in apparent happiness not caring what the suceeding days may bi ii g forth for them. While contentment is a good thing, yet wo have uoticed that a man who is co.utent nover accomplishes anything further He who is satis fied with his lot is content to stop where he is and there is never any more striving for higher attainment. Fr( m this point of yiew contentment is not a gccd thing. The greatest lives in the history of the world were lived by men who were not satisfied wiih what they had done but who kept on striving to accomplish more. # # # DrEO Watson and Prof Clinksales are doing a great work in the causo of education, The speeches thpv Iiava mrulft in tVio fl<tnanttrt?ol J V ~v VMUUMWIV/UUI campaign through this county will have their ellect in the awakening of the people to the great need, which is more pressing than ever now, of information and learning for their children who are to succeed them and fill their places. The edu- 1 national campaign comes at the ' right time to cause the minds of the ' parent's vo turn to me norry industrial School, which will soon be open ' for pupils. The Herald hopes that 1 this institution will haye the loyal 1 support of every man and woman in ^ the county. * ? * For many years it has been said that Marion County had better roads ^ than Horry. Some of the tobacco r farmers haye been hauling their pro ' duct to Mullins and Marion for sev- ^ eral years past owing to the fact ^ that they bad a better road there over which to haul it. Mow there ( t is a large force of hands and animals j at work building a good road all of ] the way from Conway to Gall van ts Ferry. When their work shall be finished, there will be no better road | anywhere. Hut this work which will mean so much for Conway, and for the hundreds of farmers who live along its route, cannot be comploted without the financial assistance of the people it is to benefit. The county is not doing this work. So if you want to help in the great cause, give liberally of your means. * * * In addition to the numerous other troubles and tribulations of the newspaper mau, is always added the fault-finding and complaints of certain people who think that they have a right to dictate t) the editor the exact way in which his paper shall be conducted, even down tj ibe matter of what special position on the printed page he shall give to cei tain articles written by them or in which they feel some special interest Wo had an example of this a short time ago, when a man who has taken the paper for many yoars wrote us to discontinue his subscription f ,r the reason and no other that an article he had contributed had been priuted on an inside page. How small such a complaint as this appears to one who is familiar with a newspaper oflice, the one who makes such a complaint will perhaps never know. In this case that we here mention, thero was not oven a special reque t sent with the aiticle to publish it on the front page. As it seems to the oditor any contributor ought to know that the paper and its management will do the very best they can for him and his needs. This is the attitudo that a man ought to haye. Should any request bo denied or modified in t'u performance, tako it for grat t d that the editor of the paper had good rca sons for the course he took and wait for better attention the next time. The contributor of an article does net Uuow the circumstances sur rounding the paper and its management at the t-me the ait'cle reaches its cilice. IIow can he know the oxact state of the type forms and the space that is available at that particul ar time? From the way some people act, it arpears that they do not think that it is any trouble at all to publish a newspaper. They think that it is jut t as easy to got an article in the paper and print it as i< is to strike it ofT on a typewriter or duplicating machine. Tf their soil would spend a week in the i flice of any county newspaper, and thus understand the difficulties, the po pWities, tho worry and the nerve-rack ing trouble that is the poition of the printer, they would henceforth and forever refrain from raising complaints such as that above referred to. As we have already said; alway.. give the paper the credit for doing the best that it can under the eircum stances for every one of its readers, and then you will have the right feeling toward it. You will bo treating the editor as a neighbor and a friend. The no wspaper has t j depend upon the support of the public to keep it going. Therefore the editor is oblig ed to serve the public in the vory best way he can. But hecannct do everything. Time is tco short and circumstances will never permit his giving to every man at all times, +,he 3xact things he demands. Remember this and refrain from adding your little complaint and criticism to the thousands of other troubles that fall to the lot of the newspapor publisher. At th? County Jail.
