Make all Checks or Drafts payable to The Horry Herald, or II II. Woodward, Conway, S C THURSDAY. AUG. 28th.. 1913 The tobacco Industry in Ilorr^ County has reached proportions never dreamed of by those who in 1898, first thought of introducing the growing of the weed in thiscoun ty by the farmers as a money crop The matter had to be talked for a long time before a single farmer would agree to take it up aud try the planting and handling of something new to him in a commercial senso. Finally with the aid of Capt J E Coles enough farmers were convinced of the possibilities of the soil to give tobacco a trial. About the next hardest thing to accomplish was the organization of a company to erect a warehouse. They went into it very slowly. The shares were made small and as many farm ers as poisiDie were finally pursued ed to take stock to a small amount. The warehouse was erected and foi mauy years it conducted an up-hill business. Years came along who:, the inexperienced farmers mado a failure in handling the crop, bui amid many discouragements the industry grew and grew, until tc-da^ there are three tobacco warehouses in active operation, and thero is more being sold at anyone, of these tharf used to be at the one when it was alone. This like many other things at Conway shows what can be done by steadily hammering at it from year to year. The industrj now has a slart that it cannot lose. More and more farmers are goin? into the planting of tabacco each year. Those who have been in ii frcm the first, have increased their acreage, and besides they make mortand a better grade from the same amount of land planted. We predict that just as great things will be dono In the planting of other new crops that haye been started. * ? ? It is necessary that the town coun oil pass an ordinance without delay, to prevent serious accidents that are likely to occur by collision of auto mobiles at the corner of Main Street and 3rd Avenue. Already serious consequences on seyeral occasions haye been avoided by only a hair's breadth at that point. There is no regulation or ordinance of any kind in regard to it, It is one of the 1 busiest spots in the town, and ve- , Jiteles of everj class pass around 1 < ? - " , - - - .... - ??? I I L.I I bat corner more often tbjin they do iny other point in the entire town. The only way to prevent serious lander there is to require all drivers if automobiles to come to a full stop Oeforo turning the corner, as well A? to blow the horn. Main Street is not very wide, and 1W1 Avenue is narrow. There is no room in which to avoid a smash whan two machines are turning the cornor at the usual speed in opposito directions. This ordinance can boincoi porated with mother which the town is in need of to limit the speed at which vehicles shall be driven within the corporate limits. A few days a^o II W Lowis was before the town court charged .. S?U ? if ? - - - /*ivli eAuct'um^ tne speed limit by I driving his automobile up the Main Btreet at a speed which was ostimat ed to be some where between 11 ftecr And twenty-live miles per hour. At the trial such an ordinance as limited sj eed of au otnjbiles, could noi oo produced, though it was stated that such an ordinance had been pass od by the council and ordered record ed in the ordinance book. Anyway, there is no reason why the peopl* vnd property should not be protected from danger along theso lines by ohe vassa,o? a** once of ordinances limit'ng the Lpeed within the bounds of safoty, and requiring the drive of each machine to coiuo to a fuli halt before and blow the horn before turning the corner at the 13m k building. Let this m itter be neglected for yet a little while and the town may be saddened by the death of some good cit'zen in au automobile wrock at that same corner. Should the council neglect it aft(r t leir attention has been called to the linger, it seems to us that thov will be to blame for the injury.
