Wood- < ward, Conway, S. C THURSDAY, JULY 17tn,, 1913. - i The artesian water flowing from a a hundred wells in Conway and vicin- \ Ity tastes a little queer at first to " (j the uninitiated. But it begins tr ^ taste good directly, and it is now t a common saying that one who f t onoe comes here and drinks the 1 artesian water, has to come back J j again to get more. a * * t * The town has a gasoline fire engine of which any town would be proud. While the engine was purchased < n time, it is now about paid for, but c recently it was reported that the * hose had become cracked or broken or worn out, and that in case of fire this engine would be useless in put. ting ia out. If this condition still coutinues, it is a very bad one. It should be looked after. ? * # ? When everything else has failed let the civic league take hold of it. ^ They have done more within one short year towards making Conway more sanitary and healthful, thai the board of health and the town council have done in three times ihat period of time. One great thing that they are trying to do is to teach the individual householder the importance of keeping the houst and the yards perfectly clean ano free from rubbish snd other forms K< of uncleanliness. In this way thev will accomplish wonders, and the Uti longer they keep this up, the great- na er the results will be in the matter &n of good health and happiness. O/ten things are purehased with a view to making a for< good profit, but the thing turns out to bo worthless or it has so many expenaea attached to it, that it wlnd9 W up with a loss instead 0/a profit. C(J Too many seem to imagine that they have reached great wealth too 5 early and they act as if they had to spend their money to get rid of i\ ? and keep i \ from accumulating too fast. In Columbia recently according to the news items there was a conference held by leading men and women for the common good. At least seme people have seen Ihe need of a concerted tlTort to try to better the human race as a whole. This monument is ne that will do more in the progress of the world during the next twenty ?five years, than any other one force tha'. i we can think of.?As it \S in the ia rger communities, so it is in the smaller, the selfish efforts of the individual often leads to the ir jury o' the whole.
