M>Ir? .11 PL 1? rk uv an vuctiva or uriiiH pnyaDle to The Horry Herald, or 11. H. Wood ward, Conway, S C THURSDAY, JULY 10th? 1913. Never a wan has ever spent o month iti Con way, or in Horry County, for that matter, who failed to fall in love with the people. He found them .honest, frank, unsuspicious, sociable and hospitable, having noth ing in the world that was too good for him. * * * While the weather is hot and the germs of disease consequently more mpneroua and likely to find a lodging place in your system, be more careful about what you eat and drink. The lessons learned by experience in the past are worth thousands of dollars to him who has Teamed them and then applies them to his every day life. * ? M. Tho satisfactory progress of |Con way and Horry County generally will be marked this year by many new. enterprises that will result in convenience and profit to the people. Just now there is a new tobacco warehouse open for business at Ay nor, and a new bank is about ready to take care of the financial needs of that section. The industrial school will soon be open, and new Lumber plants are being erected in many sections of the county, or the old ones are being enlarged. * * ? It should be the pride and the ambition of every man to make himself absolutely efficient in the calling that has been selected by him as his life's work. Too many are today simply drifting along, only doing each day that amount of work that is absolutely uecessary and never trying to improve their plans and methods tf work. Now and then you will find a man or a woman who strives every day to the limit of their ( OLOfgv and -1- ? iir v..v.uiuuuc ku uu more. and better work. And they aUo uae the brain that nature gave them to help< them along, bringing the \ gray matter into service as well as J the 4j-?jeules, 8 ? 1 * 2 It is no unusual thing to hear reports of pistols In the suburbs of Con way during the dead hours of night. There are communities where, if this should occur, the mat- ? r would be investigated the fol < j lowing morning to ascertain what the trouble had been, and at least locate the carcass of the yellow dog or other trespassing animal. Here it is well understood that boeau^e the reports are heard is no reason to su8{)ect that anything has been killed. To bo brief, tho shooting is done through a spirit of pure mis chief which wants to make a racket aud attract attention to the person who carries a deadly weapon by means of the unusual noise that persons can make. Why any person should want to throw away the price of a box of pistol cartridges by useless firing off a pistol in tho night, is more than anyone can say. Just what need there is here of carrying pistols at all, by any class of people, has not yet been stated. Tho fact remains that the firing of guns and pistols in certain sections of Conway in the night time has become a nui sauce. Thestuud of a pistol lired off many times in quick succession is a shock to any lover of peace and quietude. Often it is sufficient to awaken one from peaceful slumbers. We would like to show the men or' the boys who do this, that it is a disgrace to a decent community, and that nothing of this kind is ever done by any self respecting orderly inan or boy. Whenever a pistol L-. ? neard, it ought to mean that serious i trouble has arisen, and that it was lired in self defense, or was used by some peace ctlicir in the discharge of his duties in quelling a disturbance. If argumeut and pursuasion will not effect the cessation of this detestable practice, then the authorities ought to keep a strict watch of the places where it is known to occur and take up the inmates for disorderly ccn duct. There is no excuse for such a disturbance of the peace in a community w here the most of the people like to live undisturbed. ^Tho Latest ^ Greatest and Lp-to-Latest system of advertising adopted by the enterprising business management of t he well known establishment of Norton Drug Co. , has certainly caused wide comment and consideroble furore among the buying public of this section. Whon Norton Drug Co. , first announced that ihev would give away Absolutely Free the beautiful 1400.00 Parlor Grand Piano which is upon exhibition in thoir store, much curiosity wns aroused as to HOW they could alTord, from a business standpoint, to do such a thing, but when it was learned that they would give ONE PIANO VOTE with every cent paid for auy article in their store; also that the Piano was to be given absolutely Free to the person presenting the greatest number of these piano votes to them on Dec. 15th it looked like an extremely novel and most liberal advertising method. The , earnestness with which our b.ij ng public have beeu "going after" these piano votes more than makes good our prophecy that it would be a "merry strife." This novel advertising campaign, theevor increasing crowds, the many splendid values which they are offering daily has made their name a 1 household nome and a mecca for the bargain lovers of this , community. Norton Drug Co. are to be congratulated upon ( the thoroughness of their busi- i ness foresight and theciti/.ms 1 of Horry County should feel | that they have all reason to be 1 proud of the fact of having an establishment donducted upon ciint l5Krtw.il ? - -1 1 guvu 11i/v:iui uiiu true uusiDCSS || ' ^principles within our gates* Notice to Tobacco Growers.
