B W ODWARD; Editor THURSDAY FEBRUARY 27th 1913 This is the season of the year when the roadB all over the county receive their hardest test, as the weather is generally bad, and the farmers ~ J?1 fnw 4 hni ti nronc &rC DfbUilli^ ICl l/iii/iDi o iv/i iucii v/i * * * The Ciyic league, among the many thing3 they are doing, is encouraging the planting of trees. Already oaks and other shade trees have been 9et out at the residences of many of the members. * # * Compulsory education is a good thing in a way, The fact is that it is impossible to educate some people. They put one in mind of the old saying about leading the ox to water while being unable to make him drink it. * * * Many there are who spend their time in idleness, declining to render necessary work for the reason that they may ruin their health byoverwork. It is not work that ever injured anybody, Some of the oldest men in this country to-day have al" ways been the hardest workers. It is worry only that kills. * * * The problem of controlling the sale of intoxicating drinks has ever been a hard one. Up to the present time it has been found impossible to stop the sale of whiskey and beer in Charleston, The most stringent laws that it was possible to make have only restricted it to a very stnall degree. # * * TKa hUl whinh will nrevent the A UV ?* finterstate shipments of whiskey in to states where it is unlawful to sell intoxicating liquor, has been passed both branches of the National Legislature. The advocates of prohibition have labored to this end for some time and it was only after a hard fight that their end has been gained. The law will stop the shipping of whiskey from a wet into a dry State, and to this extent it will put a stop to the mail order whiskey business. * * * So far as we are informed no active step has as yet been taken toward the reindexing and transcribing of the records in the office of the Clerk of the Court. As recently stated there is an act on the statute books requiring this to be done, but only in such a way that it is left entirely to the officials to carry it out or let it alone. What we want is an aot that will be mandatory and one that will provide the means to pay for the work* # # * Another important work that has been sadly neglected is the laying of nice walks and the general improvement of the public square around the new court house, and between that building and the jail. In times of rain it is impossible to go to the court house from the street without wading. Between the court house and jail the same condition exists, eren worse if anything. It is odd to strangers to see a modern court house and jail building situated in the midst of unimproved land. Many of them remark about it and uoh remarks are fully justified by the present eondition of things. ? ? Oakshore Long Staple Cotton Seed, $2.00 per bushel. Please allow me space in your valu able paper for a few words from this place, We have had a very cold winter, although the farmers are preparing for planting. Grainger of this place attended service at Sandy Creek Sunday. There seems to be something around there very attractive to them. Messrs. P, L , Paul, and J. M Todd passed through our section Sunday enroute to Sandy Creek. Judge Alfred Grainger went to Bonifay last weok on business. Messrs. Tommy Sutton, J. W. Baker and B. If.
