WOODWARD; Editor THURSDAY FEBRUARY 20th 1913 Try to understand the things with which you are concerned in your trade nr business, and thus VOU will be the better able to manage ic prop erly and succeed where others, with less knowledge would be sure to fail. * # * I Sjme farmers have the wrong idea about the money and labor the}' spend on necessary improvements about their plantations, The mon- I ey invested in such things does more good than placed out at interest. It I adds more than double its amount to the value of the farms themselves, * * I Political affairs have reached an unusual point in the history of this State, when the chief executive, has to punish his enemies by refusing to commission men to offices that are necessary in the details of county government. Or does he do this to please his friends? j * * i * Drain the low places and banish the mosquito. In this way and in this way only, can you make this place absolutely free from malaria. Hartsville, S. C., is eaid to be practically free from this disease, and it did it by draining out the low lands and destroying the breeding places of the mosquito. Take lesson and I do likewise. * * * Some people evidently believe that the newsptpors were not intended 1 for anything except to roast others. That idea no longer holds. If you have anything against your neighbor or even your worst enemy, don't come to the newspaper and expect to air your feelings and roist the other fellow alive Go to him and attend to your own cussing. * * * The transcribing aud reindexing of the records in the office of the Clerk of the Court of Common Pleas in this county, is a matter of almost absolute necessity. It is indeed so, if we intend to keep up wit'i the march of modern progress and im-l' provement in our county offices as j well as in other affairs. Frequent-1 ly have we called this to the atten-1 tion of the grand-juries, and the I t members of the Legislature. The , Legislature, it is true, has already 1 passed an act requiring the work to , be done, but as we have often point" < " - e I on t be tore in tnese uuiuuuua, j? Wois lacking in the means to enforce it and carry out its provisions. We again call this important matter to the attention of the delegation in the General Assembly, and again < ask them to provide the means r whereby the act already on the statute books may be enforced and the j w jrk done that is needed. In other 1 coanties this work has been done 1 < and there the people would not be , without it for any amount of money. It is not for the lawyers alone that tho work is needed, as some might < suppose. The main reason for the work is the need for a simple system that a layman may understand, and enable him to ascertain for himself, ' without the service of an attorney, > \ v h the matter that he wishes to k now v about his land. Like matters stand 1 at this time, it takes a good lawyer with experience and knowledge to fcoow where to look for the records, the work done up in modern | <1 ityle and all of the indexes brought : ^ ?jp to date, it would be easy for any ^tewpediir to find any particular record P Holmes of Adrian section in Conway last week FERTILIZER WINNERS The Corn Club Boys Who Won the Prizes of Guano Offered by the Guano Companies.
