Adrian, S. C,, Sept 17th,?Two large rattle snakes were killed near i tlie residence of J. P. Lrndlam, near this place on last Monday morning t One of them measured 4 feet and 2 inches, and had 8 rattles, the otb- 1 er measured 4 feet and had 7 rattles. One of Mr. Ludlam's little girls found the snakes in the large bush near the house, and came near to being bitten as she went to gather figs. Mr. Lud'am and his son wore away from home, and Mr. ' B >yd Ludlam was sent for. After < he had taken one of the stakes out1 1 of the bush, he discovered the other ( one, but not until after he came no ir being bitten. And with this growth cer tain city diseases are appearing among us. particularly typhoid fever, a disease which w as unknown among us ?i few rears ago. Other lowiis have gotten used to it and say nothing about it. for they expect an epidemic of fever every summer. But I hope wo shall never get us*d to it, for it is a disease ihat can be and should be exterminated. We have almost mastered the malarial situation, and we have less and loss of it every year. Wo have learned to screen our houses, and wh hava also found out that the rnoe..qui'o is the only thing that carries ma'aria, And vre have further found out that the only kind of mosquito that is malarial is one that never flies except in t-he dark. The oason some people in screened hous es have malaria is because they sit out on their piazzas or porches at nig)it in the dark and lob the mosquitoes bite them, So the question of malaria is practically solved. Now as to typhoid fever the screen iug of our houses is a grsat help in preventing it, for tlie common house IIv snrrirs more, typhotd germs than any other single agency. Next to thai miJK is me moat common carrier of the typhus ^priri, and usually it is the 11 y that put the gerui in th* ru'dlc. But back of this is the sanitary condition of the town. As people become more crowded in the town** it is harder to keep proper sanitary conditions. But cleanliness is naxt to godliness, and it is our Christian duty to enforce it by law. A cltan tovrn means a healthy town. Th? typhoid germ will live even though frozen. The only thing that will kill it is boiling. Heating to tho boiling point always kills the germ.
