a majority of tho votes cast,
and it none of the three had received
a majority, then to declare a
third primary to elect the man to
go w i t h S ta n i ey.
After the committee was called to
order Mr. J. O Norton for J. A.
McDermott, State Executive Comteeman,
presented to the body the
request of tho Slate Committee for
copies of the precinct club rolls of
this county, and that all precinct
chairmen be directed to supply copies
to be forwarded to Columbia.

Large Snakes Near Adrian.
Adrian, S. C,, Sept 17th,?Two
large rattle snakes were killed near i
tlie residence of J. P. Lrndlam, near
this place on last Monday morning t
One of them measured 4 feet and 2
inches, and had 8 rattles, the otb- 1
er measured 4 feet and had 7 rattles.
One of Mr. Ludlam's little
girls found the snakes in the large
bush near the house, and came
near to being bitten as she went to
gather figs. Mr. Lud'am and his
son wore away from home, and Mr. '
B >yd Ludlam was sent for. After <
he had taken one of the stakes out1 1
of the bush, he discovered the other (
one, but not until after he came
no ir being bitten. In the sue 111 e
with the snakes tho rattles were
broken so that none were found ex

Dog and Was Ditteu From the Effects
of Which She Died. Other

Pasteur Treatment.

the ten year eld daughter of

log. Strange to relate there was
not. any sign of a bite or he body
if the child. Three weeks ago iast|

home with the pet dog. ard on Sunday

with symptoms of the ddea.-o. The

ana it actually bit two ofwer young
children of Mr. Martin, rs well as

was called to treat the sufferings

the advice of the physician,

disease bofore leaving for Columbia.
Too'sufferings of the child were
pathetic. The lirst signs of the disease
were noticed *evera/. days before
the convulsions came on. This
?v.is the curious way the child had
of taking water. .She would dip a|
spoon into the water and convey it. \
to her mouth while she held her
head as far away from the sight of
it as she could. Later, the mere
sight of water would cause spisms.
The entire people of the State
should know the great work the
State Hoard of "Health is doing in
Columbia in the prevention of this
liseaso. The last rcj orb of the
Board yu this subject. sboVs they
had treated 255 cases up to the date
jf the report, and out of that number
lost oulv two. When one is bition
by a dog supposed to be mad,
the lirst thing to do is to cut off his
lead and send it to the labaratory
Columbia. They have means of ex
imining tha head and determine if
the animal was suffering Iron rajios.
If the germ of the disease be
'ound, the next and only thing to
lo is to take the treatmset, and the
diances of fatality are very small
judging from the success that, the
joard has had from the very tirst

On Monday of last weeK, near Little
River, Warren, the young son of
William Bellamy, while driving a

Conway ?s the healthiest town in
vhich I have ever had 'he pleasure
;f residing. Ii is really amusing to
vp(? the dread that some of the sickly
torrns up the country h;uo of
healthy Conway. It is eithor ignorance
or jealousy on 'heir part, tiui
ur towu is growing rapidly and is
fast assuming the proportion* of a
citv. And with this growth cer
tain city diseases are appearing
among us. particularly typhoid fever,
a disease which w as unknown
among us ?i few rears ago. Other
lowiis have gotten used to it and say
nothing about it. for they expect an
epidemic of fever every summer.
But I hope wo shall never get us*d
to it, for it is a disease ihat can be
and should be exterminated.
Vaceiop.tion is good but thorough
sanitation is still better, and both
'oge.tber will forever bauish this
dreadftil disease from our fair town.
It. is our Christian duly to take]
thoso lvaventati ve xeasuro?, for an |
ounce of prevention is worth a wtolo
ton of cure.
We have almost mastered the malarial
situation, and we have less
and loss of it every year. Wo have
learned to screen our houses, and
wh hava also found out that the rnoe..qui'o
is the only thing that carries
ma'aria, And vre have further
found out that the only kind of mosquito
that is malarial is one that
never flies except in t-he dark. The
oason some people in screened hous
es have malaria is because they sit
out on their piazzas or porches at
nig)it in the dark and lob the mosquitoes
bite them, So the question
of malaria is practically solved.
Now as to typhoid fever the screen
iug of our houses is a grsat help in
preventing it, for tlie common house
IIv snrrirs more, typhotd germs than
any other single agency. Next to

of the typhus ^priri, and usually
it is the 11 y that put the gerui in

But back of this is the sanitary
condition of the town. As people
become more crowded in the town**
it is harder to keep proper sanitary
conditions. But cleanliness is naxt
to godliness, and it is our Christian
duty to enforce it by law. A cltan
tovrn means a healthy town.
Th? typhoid germ will live even
though frozen. The only thing that
will kill it is boiling. Heating to
tho boiling point always kills the
germ.

It rill probably take two years or
more, J understand, to work out
this matter to a solution,for there are
some legal and constitutional difficulties
to be met. But certainly it
is time to begin. Our board ot

lug of our citizens t-o discuss these
matters, but very little interest is
bring shown, I urge you all to respond
heartily to the next call of
the board for a public meeting of
the cit-i/.ana.
