B Ji'VCKlPTJON ONE DOLLAR PER YEAH H? WOODWARD. Editor THURSDAY. NOVEMBER 16, 1911 While the Democratic victory in some of the States where elections were held on Tuesday of last week, were not as complete as they should have been according to the eternal fitness of things, yet the victories V were complete enough to increase the hopes for a sweeping Democratic victory in the Presidential election next November, If straws are an indication of which way the wind blows and coming events cast their shadows before, then the result of those elections can reasonably be f^iron as forerunners of the Darao vu n vu wvw ocratic tidal wave which is expected to sweep this country next fall. It appears that the people are tired of Republican mi&government by which the laws are made and administered for the benefit of the plutocrat and the trust, both of which are enemies of the people, and a change is desired. Ojr streets and avenues were in a sloppy and mushy condition several days last week on account of the drizzly, drozzly rains which foil here during that time. The condition of the streets under the circumstances is nothing more than could be expected in view of tho fact that our City * Fathers have but recently clayed many of them and are even - * i now ciaying others, ana iney nave not yet had time for the sand and clay to thoroughly mix and season. When this transformation takes place we will then have good drivev ays for automobiles and other ve hides, as well as sidewalks for pedestrians?something that Conway shouid justly feel proud of. We can very well afford to suffer the ill which now a 111 let us in order that we may more fully appreciate and enjoy the blessings which are to fol* ' ?:i? lj.v those present temporary cvua. The long drawn out lit Ration of 1 lie Government to dissolve tho Great American Tobacco Trust, which was commenced four and half years ago, as a monopoly in restraint of trade, has turned out to be a most tiuld face farce, a travesty on justice and an imposition or the people . Toe Supreme Court ordered the dissolution of the Trust for the reason stated above, and the Circuit Court last week accepted the terms of dissolution written for iho Trust and solely and wholly in the interest of 1 he T u?t atfa'nst the earnest protest. of the Government. They uullify the (indir gs of tho Supn me Court and violate both the .-pint Rtid letter of tho order, as it permits tho trust to perpetuate its organization under a new name but ---!aU 4 U r.nmn #,1U mtlawflll rmli(t!ft<S VJHI IUC RUIIil' WIU uuiu < ?> and management. Thedeliverenceof the Supreme Court mean*, if it meant anything, to kill out the hydra headed monster branches and roots; that of the Circuit C;urt, the perpetuation of the monopoly in restraint of trade, but under several new names. A clear case of rob binp justice of its hard earn victory and cheating the people out of theii Constitutional rights. There is no reason that we cai see why Conway should not be th 'Queen City of the Pee Dees. " i most assuredly has all the essential to make it such if wo but act well ou part and devolop the gifts whic the unstinted hand of Nature hi so lavishly bestowed upon us. Its climatic conditions are healthful, salubrious and invigorating; its moral tone is of the highest order, while its educational advantages arc second to none in the State. Its citizenship is law-abiding, progres siveana enterprising, ah its established industries and enterprises are in a healthy condition. Upon the whole it will pay those seeking homes or investments to investigate the claims of Conway before coming to a definite decision. We understand that Maj >r George P Howell, of the United States Engineer corps, has recently made a tour of inspection of the Little Pee Dee river from NichoL in Marion county to the confluence of Bitr Pee Dee. The object of this inspection is to ascertain the feasibility and the cost cf opining this ri/er to navigation by removing snags and other obstacles from the channel. This is an important undertaking and an improvement wnich has loutf been needed and the want of which has unquestionably had a big influence in retarding the growth and development of that portion of Horry contigeous to the river* Abe people of Galivants Ferry, Dote Blutf townships aud a "portion of Buck have been greatly hampered in their agricultural pursuits by reason of their isolation and t he great inconvenience they are put to in reaching their market with their products which heretofore could only be done at the expenditure of both time and money, and the opening of this river to navigation v/ill put a stop to this leakage of the farmer's pocket book and this saving will aggregate a considerable sum at the end of each year. If the money available for this purpose is properly and judiciously spent in the improvement of this river and the work hones ly performed according to the plans and specificaticns, and not wasted or used in the prosecution of the work on other rivers, Harbors and bays, as has been the case with the appropriations of other rivers in times past, as a recent candidate for Congressional honors publicly charged upon the hustings of the District, rhe people of those townships wili have just cause to be thankful thai Ellerbe, who is behind this U ider taking, was returned to Cong>ess \ cold wave struct Conway las1 Mouday I ^ C 1 I i \ Slightly Used 5 jP ANI) ^ | REBUILT PIAMOS ^ ^ This is the opportunity that ? you have been looking for so A J* ionK- 4 ^ 1 hirty-Five Real Bargains? ^ ?
