While the Democratic victory in
some of the States where elections
were held on Tuesday of last week,
were not as complete as they should
have been according to the eternal
fitness of things, yet the victories
V
were complete enough to increase
the hopes for a sweeping Democratic
victory in the Presidential election
next November, If straws are an
indication of which way the wind
blows and coming events cast their
shadows before, then the result of
those elections can reasonably be
f^iron as forerunners of the Darao
vu n vu wvw
ocratic tidal wave which is expected
to sweep this country next fall. It
appears that the people are tired of
Republican mi&government by which
the laws are made and administered
for the benefit of the plutocrat and
the trust, both of which are enemies
of the people, and a change is
desired.
Ojr streets and avenues were in a
sloppy and mushy condition several
days last week on account of the
drizzly, drozzly rains which foil here
during that time. The condition of
the streets under the circumstances
is nothing more than could be expected
in view of tho fact that our

When this transformation takes
place we will then have good drivev

hides, as well as sidewalks for pedestrians?something
that Conway
shouid justly feel proud of. We
can very well afford to suffer the ill which

The long drawn out lit Ration of

Great American Tobacco Trust,
which was commenced four and half
years ago, as a monopoly in restraint
of trade, has turned out to be a most
tiuld face farce, a travesty on justice
and an imposition or the people
. Toe Supreme Court ordered the dissolution
of the Trust for the reason
stated above, and the Circuit Court
last week accepted the terms of dissolution

meant anything, to kill out the hydra

climatic conditions are healthful,
salubrious and invigorating; its
moral tone is of the highest order,
while its educational advantages arc
second to none in the State. Its
citizenship is law-abiding, progres

are in a healthy condition. Upon
the whole it will pay those seeking
homes or investments to investigate
the claims of Conway before coming
to a definite decision.
We understand that Maj >r George
P Howell, of the United States Engineer
corps, has recently made a
tour of inspection of the Little Pee
Dee river from NichoL in Marion
county to the confluence of Bitr Pee
Dee. The object of this inspection
is to ascertain the feasibility and
the cost cf opining this ri/er to
navigation by removing snags and
other obstacles from the channel.
This is an important undertaking
and an improvement wnich has
loutf been needed and the want of
which has unquestionably had a big
influence in retarding the growth
and development of that portion of

in their agricultural pursuits by

only be done at the expenditure of
both time and money, and the opening
