C., July 22 ?t am sending you under separate cover three samples of apples grown in my orchard on "Greater Rocky Point," The large, green variety is the "Old Horse," long and favorably known as the finest all-purpose apple grown in North Carolina?the ne plus ultra, t*be sine qua non, the seek-no-further. I found them growing last week on the mountain side and in gorges on Black Mountain. They grew equally as well, possibly larger in Piedmont North Carolina and I have grown them in Eastern North Carolina (Duplin county) to be five inches in diameter. For cider, vinegar, fried, stewed, baked, roasted, dried or raw, they absolutely have no superior. When pulled from the tree and placed in a cool room, they impart an odor aud tickle the palate as no other Summer apple. Unfortunately of late years ttie trees are titrated with a black scab or rot in ih fork whore the limbs branch en. The grafted or budded tree of this variety seems to be almost worih'e^s on this account. I know of some trees that were started from 'suckers" (sprouts), that yet bear tolerably full crops. The striped apple Is known locally as the "Westbrook Apple" and originated by Mr. Jackson Wts brook, of Harrison Creek, Pender county. For cider, fry and apple dumplings, it's ha^d to beat and is extremely prolific. T imagine it is a seedling of the "Summer Queen," whose characteristics ic closely resembles. The large, red apple is known and catalogued as the 'King Dickson," locally as the "Queen" (a misnomer) It was originated by a forbear of mine, Mr. William Dickson, of Duplin county, who, when a young man. about 1790, visited Old Man Jimmy r r? _ n r* n _____ A .. iving, on oix nuns, oampson uouniy wheh a quarterly meeting was being held. Mr. King was an uncle of LJ. S. Vice President Wm. R. Kin# Ele (Mr. James Eving), made famous apple brandy that was not tapped until it had reached its fifth year when it became in the venacular of day "mellow." Mr. Dickson car ried home some red apples and planted the seed, fruit grew thorefrom and he named it the "Kir# D.ck son," fitting name for such an apple. The fruit was brought to New Hanover by Mr. Jarnes Mclnlire, an uncle of Mr. Metier Mclnt\re, of Wilmington, one has been well scattered as it grows from North Carolina to Tt xas 't teems to be immune from "fire blight," is a sure bearer and in point of flavor is a sweet from the time the bloom drops until maturity Mr. W. Of course it didn't take very skillful manipulation on the part of the rustic swain to count the seed just as he wished them counted (much easier than couniing election returns), especially if both sides were willing. Alas those sweet old days are gone The urirls and the apples too are mighty night gone. Sic transit gloria mundi. Watermelons are becoming a drug on the Conway market. News from Murrel.'s Inlet.
