Kdltor THURSDAY. MARCH 23, 1911 Dorlhan High School Closing. [This communication should have appeared seveial woeks ago, but the crowded condition of our columns during that time made it impossiole for it-j appearance sooner. We hope this explanation will Pe satisfactory to all parties concerned ] The commencement exercises Friday night, February 24 h, closed another session of the Doihan High School, The weather was more favorable than last > ear, the attendance much larger and we were very m?oh gratified at the many kiud expressions regarding the exercises. This is our second year here. Our family of six, also Miss Ruth Williams, of Augusta, Ga., our excellent music teacher; besides several bjirdiug pupils, have been comfortaoly situated in the lower rooms of the school building. It has been neeessiry to use two plant s most of the lime in order to accommodate the music pupil?. The dis?G. 4 ! ,. . . i I *1 a % ti iut 1^ mlj in, cunsequenMy toe school is not crowded with public school scholars. This gives a line opportunity for pay students. During the two years we have enrolled twenty-six such students; several of whom, perhaps half, were from Sooth Carolina, Next year, if necessary, and it looks* now if it will be, we intend building an annex, either to be used as a music ro >m or to ace 7 rn mod ate m re boarders. During rhe year the school has been supplitd with patent desks, a library, new 11 lg and vollty ball outfit besides improvement on the grounds, includiug the settiug out of several dozen shade trees along walks. The progressive spirit of the school is also finely shown by the fact that the students themselves invested more than twentyfi\*3 dollars in tennis rackets and nets. Now we have thrno nnnrts; and those add no little to the life of the school. Oar ljibi hjme was in Wake countv. where the school farms are coming into favor. Opening early as we do here in order to get in an eight month term before strawberry season, we want to begin to experiment m a small way with a farm of that kind, Preparations are no* being m vie to get an adj icenl lot in readiness for this season. Considering the iaco that we have the oest neighbors to be found anywhere, the most loyal and enthusiastic school board?oue of the board is now County Commissioner? we have seen anywhere, with a man like Superintendent FT Wont u - L ! 3 A I - J . i cu ufinnu uiB educational interest*of the county, and with the grand future ahead for old Columbus (un less Editor G mtt has got us ail fooled); is it any wonder that we ai> loathed to leave, and that we haye decided to re main.
