South Have Inaugurated Active Campaign in the Interest of the Establishment of an Industrial School at Conway. At the Methodist church last b'riday uighfc there was a meeting of unusual interest. Mrs W L Wait, one of the ollicers of the Woman's Home Missionary Society of the Methodist Church in South Carolina has been much interested in the foundation of an Industrial School In this section of the State. To this end she arranged for the visit of Mrs E W MaoDonell, of Nashville, Tonn., who is one of the two General Secretaries for Home Missions in the S ;uthern Methodist church, to look over the situation. Quite unexpectedly Mrs MacDonell brought Belle H Bennett, of Kichinond, Ky., with her. Miss Bennett is one of the most brilliant women on the American platform, and she U .l/3n *l>> fliL-t i n/ifirtn /'if hnin(f IIU1UQ lillC lil^U uintiuv/viuii v/i uviu^ the president of the Woman's Missionary Councilor her entire Church. It was indeed a rare privilege to have such a lady in Conway, With | them caine Kev E O Watson, D D , pastor of the Woshiugton Street j Methodist church, Columbia. S. C., who was formerly;! presiding elder of the Marion District. He is deep- I ly interested in this question of an industrial school at this point, and it is putting forth his best efforts to realize it. After devotional exercises conducted by the pastor,Mrs Li W MacDonell was introduced and she addressed the congregation ou the general work of the Woman's Home Mission Society throughout the Southland, concluding with special emphasis upon the need for industrial education. Following ' this Miss Bennett discussed industaial educa tion She called for the heariest co-operation with our public school system, and urged its improvement in all possible ways. She then pointed out the opportunity of the church to supplement the effort ol the state in helping every girl to be a home maker of the best kind, and equipping every boy with a trade Dr Watson addressed the audience ori the same pha eof home missionary endeavor, and told of his o.vn deep interest in the enterprise. Ho showed a profound interest in the bright boys and girls in this aud contiguous counties, and he wants to give thein a chance to get the best education at small expense ftirs wan saiu a iow wuius iu wuelusion expressing her joy at the encouraging prospects. Mrs Wait also addressed the Methodist congregation on Sunday night. Her message was highly instructive and intensely interesting. Dr Watson, Mrs MacDonell and , Miss Bennett left for their respec-^v tive homes on Saturday morning, and Mrs V\Tait left on Monday of this week. With referouce to the Industrial School far-reaching and carefully laid plans are being for* J - ? ?^^ mUlcLtGQ, 11> bL't'iiis ijuue ucriniu that this enterprise will be established in the near future. It is also practically assured that it will be located in Horry County. Certainly our citizens should use every effort to secure its establishment here and lend it their heartiest support. Methodist Revival Meeting. ? A. The trial of Mrs Rosa Hayes and her husband should now be with the past It is best for the world to forget them, or their trial as soon as possible, and every man, whose ..eart feels the throb of love, should desire to throw a mantle of charity over the att'iir, in view of the jury's verdict, and to sincerely hope that henceforth Mrs Hayes will atone for whatever indiscretion, whatever dark deed may have crept, or been forced into her life. Surely, only ? W /\ * c> V i r? < f r\ f t \ t ?. \y 1 ri OUU tUlJUCl O w 11TO I I Li fJy KJ1 1 v 7 OUUU1U follow the young woman. Whether or not the jurv's verdict was a righteous one is with the past, and humuu nature is so delicately constructed, is subj -ct to such big waves of emotions, acid to so many warm impulses of action that niio out of the ten men who now proclaim the verdict aa inj ist one. *ouid have acted in 1 ik? manner had they been placed in the same trying, really pathetic situation doing duty as jurors. The peculiar -iituatiou of aiij like alTair, with a wcmin's life or liberty at stake, al ways presents one of the most complicated problems in the history of the courts, e>p?ciali/ wneu tun woman clams ?h?i in r honor has been assailed. The H ?.yes case, too, possessed an piemen | hit wasbjund to make a tierce blaze within the breast of man. This would not excuse the conduct of the woman, but nevertheless in its furious pulsation is apt to permit her escape. That element was the fact that Mrs. Hayes was a married woman, that youug Floyd knew such and that he professed to be a friend of the husband. Then he should have remained away; he should not have helped to desecrate the family tireside of any man; to ruthlessly shatter the ties biudiug husband and wife. C., THUI NEW MOB III To Carry Mail Between Georgetown and Conway. THE PROPOSITION OPPOSED Mr. McKeithan is at the Head of a Company Whieh Proposes to Put on a Daily Mail and Passenger Line Between Georgetow n and Conway. Some Think it a Good Proposition While Many Others Think Otherwise. The Steamer Carolina was recently purchased bv Mr J M McKeithan at Smithyille, N. 0,, and the buat will be used as a daily passenger boat between this point and Georgetown. Preparations have been made for this for some time The boad has been brought to Conway and is now at the docks awaiting the initial trip which has not been announced yet. It was stated yesterday that the boat would not start until the owner learns whether he can secure the contract for carrying the mail between the two points. As the mail routes now stand, the mail is car ried from Conway by the star route as far down as Port Harrelson aud buddy Lake, while a steamer now running to Bucksville lakes it from that point on to Georgetown every other dav, The Carolina oilers a daily mail instead of every other day plan now on from Bucksville to '1 Tlin rtlClUlimjn k tn urui n u . i. uu iuv/?v v w obtain the contract for carrying the mail waK started some time ago, bat it may be several days yet before this part of the matter is defina'ely settled Some of the people along the route object to the change for the reason that the boat leaving here in the morning, citizens will not get their afternoon mail until the morning after. Those favoring tne new boat sa}r that the>*e is as much mail arriving at Conway on the mid night train as on ttie afternoou train, anu as to ttns night mail, the people would receive i*. within a few hours Tne postmasters all along the rou e uave been asited to use their influence in getting the contract changed As soou a* the mail matter has been settled, it is stated that the b>at. will begio her daily trips, leaving Conway early each morning and return in the afwrnoon. The ooat ha-i a speed of twelve miles per hour, and it is said that she can make the daily trip easily. Brilliant Social Event. Perhaps the most brilliant event which has bteu brought off in Conway in recent years, oSr.urred last HYiday;&ftthcuoon when Mrs H. W Ambrose ofneriain?jd about fifty of Conway's most exclusive set in honor of her sister, Mrs G H. Fenson, of Toronto, Canada. The reception was held between 5 and 6 x>'clock nnd presented a scene of bewilder ing gayty a?d pleasure Beautiful women handsomely gowned "lcDt enchantment to the view" and the mingling and commingling of the beauty and wit of our staid old town was among the prominent features of the occasion. The luxurious home of Mrs Am- J brose was tastefully and artistically decorated with ferns, potted plants and flowers. The color scheme of library of yellow and green was very effective by the harmonious blending of vari colored candles. The diuing room, with its pink candle shades and golden caudleabra with its det orations of pink carnations was like a fascinating picture of a fairy sceue that charmed and thrilled the beholder wtih a pleasure that will linger refreshingly in the memory of those who were present for many years to come. Madames Bessie Sherwood and Lollie Collins charmingly assisted the hostess in receiving the guests and during the serving of delightful refreshments of sandwiches, cream and cake, Mrs Eu Norton presided with grace and ease at the punch bowl Point lace doilies over net and pink silk were used at the luncheon. On last Friday evening the regular business meeting of the Epvrorth League was held at ths residence of Mr B G Collins. The meeting as usual was well attended, everyone present showed intense iuterest in the welfare of the organization, and several committees made very encouraging reports, which showed that the League was an active one. -1 ^ I . i. A. 1 lbe secretary reported inut uie membership was almost double the enrollment of last year this time. Conway is to be congratulated in having such a band of organized young workers. The League has done a great work in Con way during the past several years, but this is only a beginning. Never before has it had such opportunities to do something, and it looks as though every member has determined to take advantage of these opportunities. Some time ago the League was instrumental in securing the services of Rev Sam T. Creech, who delivered a very interesting lecture in the old M. E. church building. The building was thoroughly renovated and artistically decorated by some of the young leaguers ror tne i occasion. The funds raised by this lecture was the beginning of I he Ep worth League Librarv Fund, with which, as soon as iargeenough, will be used in making some changes in the old church building, and iu ostabli.-hing a library and a regular meeting room for the use of the Lague ana other like societies of the church. This is a very worthy cause and the League is to be oommeudod in taking this responsibility upon its shoulders It is hoped that some of the older heads of the ctt v will take interest in this work. If the proper steps are taken, and the necessary aid given, it is possible to make something from this building thai will be an honor to the town. A Y. M. C. A. has been suggested Why not? Several plans to raise money have been submitted to the finance and arrangement committees. Tnese committees have already arranged to have Rev J W Daniel lecture for us in the near fuj ure, arid ii is hopeo that the a!tendance at this leciure will be very good The commute s also have uuder advisement ihe 4,Ped!ers bair ' This will be something qui'e new to Conway and very good r suits are expected from it Good resul's are expected from the dt mocr hip campaign which will begin its* work soon The campaign is to be composed of the entire membersh?p of the League divided into two p ir a, one half to be distinguished by a yellow ribbon badge and the other by a white ribbon badge. The side wnich is unfortunate enough to be beaten are expected to entertain t he victorious. There are just lots of \oung people in town who should attend the League, also there are lots of old members who have lost interest and do not attend. The League as a whole has many important features. It is under tho supervision of the pastor and if taken advantage of the benefits derived from it are many. ll can reach young folks much better that the church can and many persons have been brought into the church either directly or indirectly by the League. 1st, There is the devotional department, and much stress is paid this department. Devotional services are held regularly every Sun day afternoon A week of prayer meeting is going to be held soon under the manage nent of this department. 2nd. Comes the missionary department under the management of( the 4th Vice-President. Missionary meeting held every fourth Sunday. 3rd. Comes the charity and help department, which is a very unpen tant part of League work. 4th. Comes the Literary and Social departments. 5th. Comes the business department, The League holds its repmla*' business meetings each month Has its financial obligations to meet each year and is kept in constant touch with headquarters through the business department. Looking ahead it is wondetful to see the great future the Conway League has before it?of tho great things they can do if their pent up energy, strength and enthusiasm can only be directed into tho right VUMU ^ AVJ % Tbe Conway League has a reputation to keep up and to build higher. It will uever do for Conway to be any wbore except in tbe front rank, aud to keep her there, there should be cooperation, so get busy. Cor re? pond i ng Secretary.
