FEBRUARY 16. 1911 The strawberry farms are scenes of great activity just now and all growers are looking forward to a lr.ran or on and oavinir prices. 11 is said by those who have observed conditions that if the old field plum tree blooms in February the crop wiil be an abundant. If this is the case then the crop of old field plums will be threat. 11 the election of the additional As ociate Ju.tice of the Supreme th?' Horry delegation in the General Assembly divided. S:> far the administration of Governor Blease has been sensational, if nothing else. It. seems to be his purprso in guiding the ship of State to get away from the convention which characterized the regime of his predecessors and blaz? out a now way peculiar to himself and in a'l this he endeavors to keep within the constitution and the la .v. We learn frcm a pretty authentx source that a petition is being circulated, or is being prepared for circulation, for signatures asking for an election on the question of dispensary or no dh penstrry for Conway. We understand further, t-Lat many who have heretofore been opf po^ed to the establishment of a dispensary at Conway are behind ihe present movement and are pushing it for all it is worth. If there is such a petiiion in circulation a diligent inquiry has failtc to locate it It seems to us that the ccmmittecappointed by the General Assembv to inquire into the question as to w hose duty it is to appoint a special judge to preside at a term of court in case the regular judges are engaged, went a far way out of its way to give Governor Blease a slap in the face. There are three departments of our government whose functions are separate and distinc t. Vha Legislative make the la vs, the Judicial interpreter the laws and the Executive'enforce the la w. In interpreting the la\. the committee arrogated to itself prerogatives, vest en solely in the Supreme Court, contrary to the plain mandates of the C >ndilution. < YVe believe that too much siresis put upon the action of the Horrj Medical Scc'ety in increasing its Fee Bill. We are of the opinion that these criticistns are more the result of a improper understanding of; tliC situation than of a desire to unjustly censure iho physicians for insisting upon a fair recompense for the time and labor expended. Tin fact of the matter, from our vie^ point, is that, considering the amount of labor, its ner/o racking ciaractr and inconveniences t< the physician which the very nature of his calling subjects hicn in regard to all ihat goes to make up iho happiness, comfort and convenience of life, the physicians are the p^or est paid and dors more charity work than any of the other professions. Trial by jury is the essence of the consti'uiion, and has been so de Glared by the State Supreme CourV This spirit was breathed into th: ] great Magna Charter, and it habeen handed down to the present g?n- ^ eration as a glorious heritage to b* guarded with a joalous cya. In tho case of Julius Wise vs. John H Meet-z'*, Intend ant of the Town o' 4 Lexington, in which the Imendan' , refusal Wise a jury upon demand, I the Supreme Court reversed the Ir 1 tendant and remanded tbo case f r trial by jury. This i3 the law as in terpreted by the highest judicial authority in the State> arul as 8U?h ?1 mUit be obeyed, though the hoavent fall.
