k? I ' * VOL XXIV. JIRIIEIIER. Rev J M Fleming Writes Interestingly MEANING OF GOOD ROADS " " ' ?*-- a?:? ur..., A He llt'IlTH IU me ;\p]Milll T? uin Which the Proud Armies of AN Kurope Have Marched.?Will Increase the Value of Farm Property. Dear Herald: Having closely watched the conditions in my olci mother Sta e, 1 was very much interested in the nomination of Mr Featherstone for Governor, and in the success of Mr. Spivey's bond issue for^ood roads in Horry county But as the question is now settle - 1 A ed F >r tho present in regaras 10 both propositions, I ask tno privilege of submitiiog a few remarks on the subject of good rouds which will not only be true from a point ol present necessity but verified by history. In has been slid that good roads are the physical symbol which measures the progress of any age. the off spring of eivilizition, and the chief factors for its advancement. As a people, we are largely known by our public roads, because good roads and and eiviliz ttion go hand in hand. The nations which have been the strongest world oeaters have been road builders, and though some of the nations themselves have fallen, their history iu a few instan ees is proved upon their roads which have withstood tho traffic and ravages of time for ages past. The Babylonians. Egyptians, Carth'agenians and Romans were all gerat road buiders. The road leading from Babylon to Momni.itt iiaucd awav back in the gray dawn of the historic morning, and along it arose as if by ma# ic the great cities of Nineveh, I)emascus and Antioch The G recians and Romans were scientific road builders and some of. them?we are told?are still in use. The Appian Way, was built more than 2000 years ago and is still in use. Over it have inarched the proud armies of all Europe, and it was over this same road that Paul, the great Apostle to the Gentiles, tramped his weary way to Rome where he delivered in the presence of Caesar that masterful address, Acts, 28: 13. 23. Europe knows what good roads mean and we are told that on every hand the eye is met with the splendid sight of well built roads, laid out with graceful curves, easy grades, and lined with fruit and shade trees gardens and well kept farm houses. Tae world has never a more tremendous syston of roads than are found in the United States of Ainer ica, We have more than two million miles of public roads of which amount, there are about forty thous-; and miles of stone surfaced roads and about one hundred and eight thousand miljs of gravel roads to our credit. .In a gre it, m my respects we are -win the lead among the nations of /the world, but our roads are woefully neglect'd. 11 >wover we are glad that the sentiment for better ro ids is growing. Too county in which T live(Robeson) can not boast of goo 1 roads, though they are much bitter thin some of her sister counties have. Three bales of cotton make a heavy load for two mules over the sand hills and through the swamps as some of the roads are, while in Macklenburg, New Hanover et al, a farmer can put ten or twelve bales of cotton on his wagon and two A mules will walk rignt on to market vwith it The seeret of this is their g >nd roads. Let us have good roads and our stock will be better, our farmer more valuable and our schools improved. Dot us not quit talking about good roads because the elec tion is over for thj day will dawn for us yet. J. M. Fleming, Pie Supper. " There will be a pie supper and en torliainment at Prir.ceville school house on Friday night December 2nd, 11)10.
