" Tuesday afternoon at about 2: JO d'clock the woman had just told a visitor goodbye and had returned to ihe re.or of the house to resume her domestic duties. A negro whom had never seen before appeared at the front door explaining that he had brought a letter irom uer lamter. ^"Froin my father?" she exciaimed, being very much surprised <st the negro's remarks, "what do you .mean?" "Here's what 1 mean, ' the negro -said drawing the pistol. The circumstances of the attack on 'the woman are too revolting for <pu<hlication. When tlio negro left the house she sent one of her children to a neighbor's, asking for immediate assistance. Making her way to ?a telephone she summoned the employer of her husband. The neighbors informed Policeman Milette, who was on his Imat in the neighbor.. . hood, and lie soon learned llie facts of the case and started in pursuit of the negro v.Iio is about L'u years of age. Before the erimiual assault took -place word was received from north \Uncoln street thai a negro armed wdtli a pistol was threatening to tttioot. a number of persons in the ueighUmrhood, and the reset ve ofiicer. Policeman Hite. responded. He followed l.incoln street to Second ^Street, where tie overtook and arrested Bird. The negro seemed surprised at tho arrest and demanded to know the change against him. "For carrying a pistol," replied the polic#* J tnan, who quickly disarmed him. While waiting for the patrol wagon. The officers took the negro tp the home of the woman <iud she in the presence of the officers and a neighbor said without apparent hesitation, "Yes, that's th? map." THE FARMER'S WIFE I'KICKIDKNT liAKKKTT I'.WS IIUK j DEHllKVIOI) COMPUMKM. # In Mn Addictis ll<* Hun -Ilist Made to tlio Members of the Farmers' t'llioiw. Thut the farmcr's wife in the most vital fact or in the uplifting of the agricultural interests of the country today is the contention of President Charles S. Barrett, in a statement which he has just issued from his home at Union City, (la., and addressed to the officers and members of the Farmers' Union. Says Mr. Harrett: "Now about that wife of yours. I wonder if you "v*v think what an Indispensable iniluence she has been for your own welfare in this world, and for the general advancement of the country? "1 doubt it. A good wife we are too apt to take like we do the sunshine and the fertility of the fields as a matter of course. Only when ail three arc missing do we discover lie genuine blessing. "The wife of the farmer It is wno keeps hope and ambition kindled on the hearthstone, who nerves tired bodies to the work of supporting the nation, who rears up the men and the women into whose hands the desIinies of the nation are to be handed. "1 sometimes think that It is only within recent years we have come to appreciate the monumental and historic sacrifices of these farm women. If you will indulge a slight personality I cheerfully hear witn*?*d fnri i ht whatever I have ac tV7 ? - compH.shed tor the good ot the brethren in this world, Is due to tho unselfishness, the industry and the courage of the woman who is my wife and the mother of my children. "I know that if ever my sons shall work well in tho buttle for the common good, and 14ve as I would have them live?an example to ail men?it is because of tho untiring watchfulliiess and the almost Incredible self-sacrifice of their mother. "I taiU thus, that you may look about you in your own home, and see what you can do to lighten the task of your own wife, tho mother of your children. "If all goes well with tho farm, find out how much is due to her persistent toil and forgetf nines* of her own comfort. 11' your children get ahead in life?consider her part in their success. If you have experienced the common lot of passing through poverty and sickness ai.u misfortune? consider how hopeless would have been the outlook had it not been for her sustaining courage and energy. "They call the farmer the hope and the support of America. It is his wife that is the inspiration of the hope and <he bedrock of th?' support. Bear these facts In mind, when you are Inclined to be a little mean, a littlo stingy with the pocket money, or a little vainglorious about your accomplishments. 'Wot all of Carnegie's medals coined between now and doomsday will reward the silent heroLsm of the farm women who are humbly uplift ing the agricultural life of this coun- ( try." ?U;rTI N< i AG AIN ST STIM SOX.
