w ? ~ ~ 100 Million Dollars Worth of Shoes | These are stupendous figures, yet this is the yearly amount that the South spends for shoes. As a curiosity these figures may attract you for a minute, but the most curious thing about them is that three quarters of this money is regularly sent away from the South and the u fimf trmrh nnnrer for it. OUUlll lO liuu UIUV.. 2 You trade at a Southern shoe store. You give the dealer your money. You probably buy a western or northern made shoe. When the dealer pays his bill, this money, less a small per cent to the dealer, goes north or west and the South is that much poorer. Keep your money at home. Let it work for better times, better wages, more factories, more work for Southern people. Ask your dealer for The Craddock Shoe. Made in the South, by white labor, for Southern gentlemen. The best shoe value offered by any maker in the land for $3.50 and $4.00. Money spent for Craddock Shoes stays i,_~ rmwc Southern labor, Southern grocers, ill ine ouuui, ciiivt |7uj u . bakers and butchers. It builds Southern factories, homes and schools. We can support more and better industries. Let's each do his part. CRADDOCK-TERRY CO. c Lynchburg, Va. ***** iT' . THESE SHOES . WEAR EASY. The Commission's term of fTiee is thirty year?-; for, you see, the sinking fund ..as been accumulating in the meantime, and that is worth working and scheming f?#r. Do you not read in Ihe bill that, if the members of the Commission do not. ctto suit the Senator and I is rep rest utatives, a new member ca t be app inted every year? That is a btau iful dot to prevent independent e mini siouers as well as?to prevent u,o much glory getting away from Doc, f the (Joinmission should happen to want to m ike a reputation or itself. Tnore is another reason?p .rsonal to Uoc - lor providing a su s rvuni commissi >n, v* hicb you muy add to his thirst fur deposits. Arch Mu;roll, the Supervisor, hasshov n energv and a ^ruwine capacity in b s oflici It Doc wore to give Li id aim his B >ard the wot k of building roads under his bond issue, Arch wou! probably make good, and then hi? glory would overshadow the glorv of lA.c. And Goodness Grach u ! that would never do in the world. A man of proper self respect would certaiuly feel 6ome degree of hesitancy in placing himself in the portion where he would get a cash pre fit as a bank cflicial out of his action as Senator. And even Doc Spivey would feel some trepidation in doing so, if it were the first time But he has managed to save Ids face in such anomylous positions before this and you can see him now bluffing and wheedling his way through this one. And he'll succeed, if he gets half enough darkness of discussion and polite and courteous opposition. ^Spivey himself views this scheme of his from a personal standpoint, lie boasts is a great and glorious work for his people. He doubtless proposes three cheers for himself in the darkness of his own heart, whenever he thinks how shrewdly he can coin the hopes of his people for prosperity into cold cash for himself?and he give* them, too, with a tiger. In his own presentations of his scheme, the personal idea is dominant. He implies,?-yes, says,? that I have a personal motive in my opposition to his bill. He would say the same about anyone else. All the while he implicitly presents his personal glory in "happening to be the father of this scheme," as be, himself, phrases it. He spreads a false pride of achievement over selfishness of his act. "You ought to be proud to have a man of my standing and ability take his valuable time to to think for you," is the self-satislied explosion pf lis omplacent demeanor, his pleasant punning, his Jew-trader gestures, while in a sbal low understanding he gropes for words to hide the private graft provisions of his utterly useless and incoherent bill. T want you all to distinctly understand that I do not like this kind of talk in myself any more than from Doc Spivey. If I havo some slight knowledge, at least compared with Spivev, of the argumentum ad horninem, J have loarned it in self defense and ain proud of it. It is not the correct way to discuss anything Mr Spivey selected this method of discussion and T hope I have pleased him in whatever success I have had in following his example. J. O. NORTON Notice.
