Tt is true, doubtless, that the rich man pays the taxes directly, but he does it as an investment that will sooner or later as surely bring him a dividend of 8 per cent, as if that much money were invested in gilt edge securities. This proposition is plain when we consider that when the wage earner rents a house taxes, insurance, repairs and other incidental expensos, together with the legal rate of interest of 8 per cent, on the money invested in the property, are all included in the price of the rent. W hen he goes to purchase a home, or buy flour, bacon, lard, clothing and other necessaries of life, the wage earner bears his share, along with others, of the cost of handling these commodities in proportion to the amount of his purchases. This is in keeping with a well know law of business and is a legitimate transaction as otherwise the merchant would fail and the landlord would lose money on his investments So at last it is the wage earner and not the capitalist who pays the taxes.
