It should be rpmeuxbered that the
presentation of your registration
certificate together with your tax
receipt showing that your State and
county taxes have been paid, are pre
requisites to vote in the general
election to be held on the second
Tuesday in next month.
Columbia is to have another morning
daily with tx capital of a quarter
million dollars. It is to be a joint
stock concern and George R Koester,
a well know newspaper man of
the capital city, will be at the head
of the enterprise, it is said.
It now appears the reason why
the river bridges have not been
built is because there in not euoucrh
money on hand to complete them.

to this information and we can
see nothing which will justify the
Commission in withholding this information.
Had it been given
out sooner the probability is that
ways and means would have been
provided to raise the funds necessary
to complete the bridges as they
are a public necessity and thev
would have been in use today.
All this talk about the rich man
paying the taxes to support this
government is the wildest kind of
a delusion and the rottenness kind of
argument for a person laying claim
to intelligence to use. Tt is true,
doubtless, that the rich man pays
the taxes directly, but he does it as an
investment that will sooner or later
as surely bring him a dividend
of 8 per cent, as if that much money
were invested in gilt edge securities.
There is, however, not an element
of doubt in the statement that the

foot of land and his worldly possessions
are con'fired alone to the clothes
upon his back and his weekly wages,
pays the taxes in an indirect way.
This proposition is plain when we
consider that when the wage earner
rents a house taxes, insurance, repairs
and other incidental expensos,
together with the legal rate of interest
of 8 per cent, on the money
invested in the property, are all included
in the price of the rent.
W hen he goes to purchase a home, or
buy flour, bacon, lard, clothing and
other necessaries of life, the wage
earner bears his share, along with
others, of the cost of handling these
commodities in proportion to the
amount of his purchases. This is
in keeping with a well know law of
business and is a legitimate transaction
as otherwise the merchant
would fail and the landlord would
lose money on his investments So
at last it is the wage earner and not
the capitalist who pays the taxes.

sours one's disposition, but not
so with hi in. He bad a kind word
and smile for all with whom he came
01 contact. Whether on his b :at or
in his home or elsewhere he was always
the same true gentleman.
He was a member of Union Methodist
church for many years. lie
was a good citizen, a kind neighbor,
i sympathetic, tender and affectionate
husband and father. He will be
sadly missed in all these relations.
May the whole family meet again
in the sweet by arid bv in the good
world above where there is no more
parting. His Pastor.
